Chapter 2 - Corporate Security and the First Arrest

The cold click of steel handcuffs echoing against the marble floor of the cathedral shattered whatever illusion of invincibility Julian Vance had cultivated over the past three years. He stared at the gleaming metal cuffs as if they were an optical illusion, his chest heaving with indignant rage.

'This is an outrage!' Julian shouted, twisting away as the two police officers grabbed his tailored Armani sleeves. 'Do you know who I am? I am the executive vice president of Sterling Global Logistics! Claire, tell them to stop this insanity right now! Call off your dogs!'%

I didn't look back as I walked slowly down the aisle, my heels clicking a steady, rhythmic beat against the floor. 'You were the executive vice president, Julian,' I corrected, pausing just inches from him. 'As of ten minutes ago, the board unanimously voted to terminate your employment for gross misconduct, embezzlement, and falsification of corporate documents.'%

Vanessa panicked, her hands fluttering protectively over her pregnant belly as she backed away from him toward the exit. 'Julian, what is he talking about? Embezzlement? What did you do with our money? You said we were rich! You said the penthouse was ours!'%

Julian's face flushed deep crimson, a mixture of humiliation and sudden, terrifying realization. 'Shut up, Vanessa! Don't listen to them, it's a witch hunt! Claire is framing me! She's a vindictive, cold-hearted—'%

A sharp police officer cut him off, pressing him down and guiding him toward the side exit. 'Save it for the interrogation room, Mr. Vance. You have the right to remain silent...'

As the heavy doors closed behind them, cutting off Julian's frantic swearing, the murmurs in the chapel erupted into absolute chaos. Reporters stationed outside caught the flash of handcuffs through the stained-glass windows, and within minutes, push notifications would be lighting up smartphones across the financial district. Sterling Global Logistics was facing a seismic scandal, and I was standing right at the eye of the storm.

Marcus Vance approached me, briefcase in hand, looking grave. 'That was dramatic, Claire, but the real war starts now. Julian has high-priced defense attorneys on retainer, and he still has access to offshore accounts we haven't fully mapped yet.'%

'Let him try to map them,' I replied coldly, gazing out the window at the flashing lights of the police cruiser. 'He thinks he found a goldmine when he married me. He didn't realize he was walking into a landmine.'%

For months, while Julian was wining and dining Vanessa at exclusive Michelin-starred restaurants and charging luxury vacations to our joint accounts, I had been quietly assembling a forensic accounting team. Every fraudulent expense report, every forged signature on company loans, every suspicious wire transfer to offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands had been cataloged, cross-referenced, and verified. My father had been too weak in his final months to fight Julian directly, but he had given me the ultimate weapon: time and absolute authority.

'We need to secure the corporate headquarters immediately before his loyalists try to purge the server logs,' Marcus warned.

'Already handled,' I said, pulling my phone from my pocket and showing him a live feed of the IT department locking down the mainframe. 'Nobody touches a single file without my direct approval. Julian thought he was pulling off a masterpiece of corporate theft. Today, he learns what true corporate liquidation feels like.'
