Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Coup and the Emergency Vote

The mahogany double doors of the executive boardroom swung open as I walked in, flanked by Marcus Vance and two towering corporate security guards. The ten members of the board of directors were seated around the massive obsidian table, murmuring nervously among themselves. Richard Sterling sat at the far end, trying desperately to maintain a mask of calm professionalism, though a thin sheen of sweat glistened on his forehead.
'Claire,' Richard stammered, standing up quickly and forcing an awkward, grandfatherly smile. 'We were so sorry to hear about Julian's unfortunate legal troubles. Truly a tragedy. But surely you understand that business must go on. The board is prepared to step in and stabilize—'%
'Sit down, Richard,' I interrupted, my voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. I didn't take my designated seat at the head of the table; instead, I walked slowly behind him, resting my hand on the back of his chair.
Richard swallowed hard, sinking back down into his seat. 'Now see here, Claire, we have been loyal to this company for decades—'%
'Loyal?' I snapped. I slammed a thick dossier down onto the polished wood right in front of him. 'Let's talk about loyalty, Richard. Let's talk about Zenith Capital Solutions, the Cayman Islands shell company where you and Julian funneled twelve point four million dollars of corporate funds.'%
Gasps echoed around the boardroom. Several directors recoiled as if Richard had suddenly grown a second head. Richard's face turned the color of spoiled milk.
'That... that is a malicious fabrication!' Richard sputtered, his hands shaking as he pushed the dossier away. 'Show me proof! I demand legal counsel!'%
'Proof?' I motioned to the smart board behind me. David Chen remotely activated the display, flashing high-resolution PDF copies of bank transfers, wire confirmations, and Richard's own digital signature stamped onto the fraudulent transactions. 'Every single transfer bears your digital IP address, Richard. And more importantly... your biometric authorization.'%
Richard slumped back, all color draining entirely from his face. The facade had completely crumbled.
'Now,' I said, walking to the head of the table and sitting down, lacing my fingers together as I surveyed the terrified faces of the board. 'We are going to hold an emergency vote. Item number one: immediate termination of Richard Sterling for treason, fraud, and corporate espionage. Item number two: permanent forfeiture of all stock options and pension funds tied to his name. Item number three: full cooperation with federal investigators.'%
I looked directly at the senior board members, my eyes locking onto each of them in turn. 'Anyone who has an objection... please speak now, so I know who needs to pack their office boxes alongside Richard.'%
Silence gripped the room. Not a single person moved. After three agonizing seconds, the eldest board member raised a trembling hand.
'All in favor?' I asked calmly.
Ten hands shot up into the air in unison.
'Motion carried,' I said, nodding to the security guards. 'Escort Mr. Sterling out of the building. Make sure he doesn't touch a computer, a phone, or a single piece of paper on his way down.'%

As Richard was dragged out of the boardroom, muttering curses under his breath, I turned to Marcus. 'That's two down. Now let's see how Julian likes solitary confinement while we dismantle the rest of his network.'
