Chapter 12 - An Unexpected Ally from the Past

As the morning session adjourned for lunch, I stepped out into the sunlit marble corridor of the courthouse to catch my breath. The press swarmed the perimeter behind police barricades, shouting questions that blended into a chaotic roar of white noise.
'Claire! Claire Sterling! Is it true you're liquidating half of Julian's personal assets to fund a new philanthropic logistics trust?'%
I ignored them, turning toward the quiet side corridor leading to the private judges' chambers. As I walked past the tall arched windows, a soft voice called out from the shadows.
'You haven't changed your walk, Claire. Still stride like you're marching into battle.'%
I stopped dead in my tracks. I turned around slowly. Standing by the alcove was a woman in a sharp charcoal trench coat, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek bun. Her eyes—sharp, intelligent, and strikingly familiar—met mine.
'Evelyn?' I whispered, my breath catching in my throat. 'Evelyn Thorne? What are you doing here? You haven't set foot in this city since college.'%
Evelyn stepped forward, offering a faint, melancholic smile. 'I heard about your father's passing. And then I saw your name splashed across international financial news alongside Viktor Vance's indictment. I knew you'd need someone who knows how Viktor launders money through European shell corporations better than anyone else alive.'%
Evelyn Thorne had been my college roommate and financial prodigy genius, before Viktor Vance's hedge fund had aggressively bought out her family's tech startup, driving her father to ruin. She had vanished into Zurich financial circles years ago.
'You're working with the DOJ?' I asked, my eyes widening.
Evelyn pulled a slim encrypted tablet from her coat pocket and handed it to me. 'I've been undercover inside Viktor's Swiss banking network for eighteen months, Claire. I was the anonymous whistleblower who leaked the initial offshore server logs to your forensic accountant David Chen.'%
A profound wave of realization washed over me. 'It was you. All those anonymous encrypted tips... that was you helping me prepare the trap from the inside?'%
'Your father protected my family twenty years ago when Viktor tried to crush us,' Evelyn said softly, her voice thick with emotion. 'Arthur Sterling was a good man. When I saw Julian and Viktor circling your family like vultures after your father fell ill, I knew I had to step in. I brought the smoking gun, Claire. Viktor's entire Swiss holding network is about to be seized by the international banking commission.'%

I looked at Evelyn, the last puzzle piece falling perfectly into place. 'Come inside with me,' I said, a fierce smile touching my lips. 'Let's finish this together.'
