Chapter 10 - The Calm Before the Storm

The following morning brought a deceptive sense of peace. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows of the Vance estate, warming the polished wooden floors and casting long, golden patterns across the living room. In the kitchen, Valerie prepared a large, comforting breakfast of pancakes, bacon, and fresh fruit—a far cry from the cold, sterile meals of her past life.
Thomas and Nick sat side by side at the breakfast bar, deep into a whispered debate over a new video game release. For the first time since he had arrived at the restaurant, Nick looked lighter. The dark bruises around his eye had faded to a faint yellowish hue, and his shoulders weren’t constantly hunched in defensive expectation of a blow.
Valerie watched them from the stove, a bittersweet smile touching her lips. She hadn't told Nick about what Detective Miller had discovered regarding his lineage. The boy had been through enough trauma; dropping the bombshell that his abusive uncle was actually his biological uncle—and that he was the target of an inheritance war—seemed dangerously cruel.
Yet, secrecy in situations like this was a ticking time bomb.
Later that morning, while the boys were upstairs, Detective Miller called Valerie with an urgent update.
"Mrs. Vance, you need to be very careful," Miller’s voice crackled over the secure line. "Eleanor Vance didn't just visit you to intimidate you yesterday. She filed an emergency petition in family court this morning, demanding immediate custody of Nick under the pretext of being his closest surviving blood relative, citing your ongoing divorce and financial restructuring as an unstable environment."
Valerie gripped the phone tightly, her knuckles turning white. "On what grounds? She has zero legal standing, and her family history is riddled with fraud!"
"In family court, blood ties carry heavy weight initially, especially when presented by a high-priced legal team manipulating technicalities," Miller warned. "Judge Harrison is presiding over the emergency docket tomorrow morning. If we don’t present ironclad evidence of Eleanor’s malicious intent and financial motive regarding the trust fund, the judge could issue a temporary removal order."
"They want to get their hands on him before Daniel's criminal trial begins," Valerie realized aloud, the pieces locking together. "If Nick is placed in Eleanor’s custody, she can silence him permanently, rendering the prosecution’s star witness unavailable."
"Exactly," Miller agreed. "We need to move fast, Mrs. Vance. Dig up every financial record connecting Eleanor to Daniel’s offshore accounts. We need to prove in court tomorrow that her custody petition is nothing more than a kidnapping plot disguised as family welfare."
Valerie hung up the phone, her heart pounding with fierce determination. She walked to the living room archway, looking up the stairs where the muffled sounds of laughter drifted down from the boys' bedroom.

She had lost years of her life to a manipulative, abusive marriage. She had nearly lost her son to a ruthless financial schemer. She refused to lose Nick to the monsters who created them.
The battle lines were drawn. Tomorrow morning at the county courthouse, the final war for the Vance family legacy—and for Nick’s future—would begin.
