Chapter 13 - The Judge’s Verdict

Judge Harrison’s eyes remained fixed on the financial audit report for what felt like an eternity. The rhythmic scratching of his pen against the desk was the only sound in the cavernous courtroom. Eleanor Vance sat rigidly at her table, her fingers digging so hard into the wood of the podium that her knuckles were entirely white.
Finally, the judge closed the folder with a sharp thud that made several people jump.
He looked up, casting a cold, severe gaze over Eleanor and her legal team before shifting his attention to Valerie and her counsel.
"Counsel for the petitioner," Judge Harrison began, his voice dripping with dry skepticism, "your office submitted an emergency petition claiming profound concern for the welfare of minor child Nickolas Hayes. Yet, my review of these financial records reveals a deeply disturbing pattern of asset stripping, corporate fraud, and active conspiracy involving your client and her incarcerated brother—directed precisely at the rightful beneficiary sitting in this very room."
Eleanor’s attorney stood up rapidly, stammering in protest. "Your Honor, these are baseless, unverified allegations introduced without proper evidentiary review—"
"Sit down, counselor, before I hold you in contempt," Judge Harrison snapped, his voice echoing sharply off the high stone walls. He fixed Eleanor with a glare that could freeze boiling water. "I have presided over family court for twenty-eight years, Ms. Vance. I know the distinct odor of greed disguised as familial piety when I smell it."
The judge turned his attention toward Valerie, softening his expression slightly. "Mrs. Vance, the court is deeply troubled by the turbulent circumstances surrounding your recent domestic situation. However, the evidence presented clearly demonstrates that your household has provided a safe, stable, and protective environment for the child. Furthermore, the petitioner’s emergency custody motion is denied with prejudice—meaning she is permanently barred from filing similar claims without prior federal court approval."
A collective exhale of relief swept through Valerie’s side of the courtroom. Thomas let out a loud whisper of joy, wrapping his arm around Nick’s shoulders.
Judge Harrison banged his gavel once, sharp and final. "Furthermore, pursuant to federal investigators' request, minor child Nickolas Hayes’s permanent guardianship and trust protection status will remain under the joint supervision of Mrs. Valerie Vance and the federal district attorney’s office until further notice. Court is adjourned."
As the judge stood and swept back through the private chambers doors, Eleanor slammed her leather portfolio shut, shooting one final, venomous glare across the aisle at Nick before storming out of the courtroom with her disgraced attorneys trailing behind her.

Nick sat frozen in his seat for a moment, the immense weight he had carried for years slowly evaporating from his chest. He looked at Valerie, then at Thomas, a quiet, disbelieving smile finally breaking through the tension on his face.
They had won. For the first time in his life, the law hadn't failed him. Justice had actually prevailed.
