Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Web

The following morning, the sun rose over the city, casting sharp, golden light across the polished glass windows of Le Miroir’s private back office. While the restaurant remained closed to the public, the interior was a hive of frantic, high-stakes activity.

Valerie sat behind her mahogany desk, surrounded by thick binders, laptop screens, and financial audit reports. Across from her sat Detective Miller, a seasoned financial crimes investigator whose sharp eyes scanned bank statements with surgical precision.

"Your husband wasn't just skimming off the top, Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller said quietly, sliding a printed ledger across the desk. "He built an intricate web of offshore shell companies over the past eighteen months. He systematically drained your personal business expansion accounts, liquidated your father's trust fund, and was preparing to clean out the primary operating funds by the end of this week.

Valerie stared at the numbers, her stomach churning. The accounts that should have held millions showed a dwindling balance of barely three figures. If Nick hadn't intervened and recorded that confrontation in the parking garage—if Thomas hadn't discovered the files—she would have woken up completely bankrupt, with Daniel long vanished across international borders.

"He planned everything," Valerie whispered, her voice laced with bitter disbelief. "He played the devoted husband and father while quietly executing a corporate execution.

"People like Daniel are master manipulators," Miller replied, closing his folder. "They isolate their victims, gaslight them until they doubt their own sanity, and ensure no one believes the whistleblowers. Speaking of which... that boy, Nick. What’s his story? Child services ran his prints through the national database this morning.

Valerie looked up sharply. "What did they find?"

"It’s a tragic file," Miller sighed, running a hand through his graying hair. "Twelve years old. Born into a broken home, bounced through four different foster families in three years. Six months ago, he ran away from a severely abusive group home on the west side of the city. He’s been living on the streets ever since—sleeping in alleys, abandoned cars, and parking structures. The state has an active warrant out for his return to the system, but given the conditions of that facility... sending him back there would be catastrophic.

Valerie felt a heavy weight settle in her chest. She remembered Nick standing in the center of her restaurant—bruised, beaten, and starving—yet possessing the fierce courage to step between a dangerous man and a terrified child.

"He’s not going back to a state facility," Valerie stated firmly, her tone leaving zero room for argument. "Whatever legal steps are required to prevent that, initiate them immediately. I want full temporary guardianship filed by noon.

Detective Miller raised an eyebrow, a slight smile touching the corner of his mouth. "That’s a complex legal battle, Mrs. Vance, especially while you're going through a high-profile divorce and asset recovery. But given your resources—and the fact that this boy essentially saved your family—it’s doable.

Meanwhile, in the private VIP lounge upstairs, Thomas and Nick sat at opposite ends of a long leather sofa. A massive spread of hot breakfast food—scrambled eggs, pancakes, fresh fruit, and warm pastries—sat untouched on the coffee table between them.

Nick stared at the food warily, his hands tucked deep inside his oversized hoodie pockets. He looked around the luxurious room as if expecting the floor to drop out from beneath him at any second.

"You can eat, you know," Thomas said softly, breaking the prolonged silence. He pushed a plate of pancakes closer to the other boy.

Nick shook his head slowly, keeping his eyes fixed on the floor. "People don't just give things away for free, man. There's always a catch. Sooner or later, someone remembers I don't belong here, and they throw me out.

Thomas’s expression softened. He remembered the look in Nick’s eyes when he stepped in front of him in the parking garage—the absolute lack of hesitation, the willingness to take a beating for a total stranger. It was a selflessness Thomas had never witnessed in anyone, least of all his own father.

"There’s no catch," Thomas said, his voice steady and earnest. "You saved me, Nick. Mom and I... we’re not like him. We’re going to make sure you're safe.

Nick looked up, meeting Thomas’s gaze. For the first time since he had run away from the group home months ago, the impenetrable wall around his heart flickered, letting in a tiny ray of genuine warmth.
