Chapter 7 - The Ghost from the Past

Three weeks had passed since the dramatic night at Le Miroir. Daniel Vance sat behind bars in the county detention center, awaiting trial on multiple felony counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, embezzlement, and domestic intimidation. His high-priced defense attorneys were already scrambling, realizing that the combination of Nick’s audio recording, forensic accounting, and eyewitness testimony made conviction an absolute certainty.

Inside the Vance household—now fortified with new security systems and an overwhelming sense of calm—life was slowly returning to a new normal. Valerie had successfully secured temporary emergency guardianship of Nick, much to the initial resistance of the state welfare bureaucracy, which quickly dissolved when Valerie’s legal team presented documented evidence of gross negligence at Nick’s previous group home.

Nick had been given a proper room on the second floor, complete with fresh clothes, a warm bed, and a desk stacked with books. Yet, despite the luxury, old habits died hard. He still slept with his shoes placed neatly beside the bedroom door, ready to bolt at a moment’s notice.

It was a crisp Tuesday afternoon when the peace was shattered.

Valerie was in her home office reviewing property transfer documents when the front doorbell rang sharply. Thinking it was the courier service with the final bank audit reports, she walked down the grand staircase and pulled open the heavy oak front door.

Standing on the porch was not a courier. It was a sharp-featured woman in her late forties, wearing a severe gray trench coat and holding a weathered leather portfolio. Her eyes were hard, calculating, and instantly familiar in a deeply unsettling way.

"Mrs. Vance?" the woman asked, her voice clipped and professional, lacking any warmth. "I’m Eleanor Vance—Daniel’s older sister, and Thomas’s paternal aunt."

Valerie’s hand tightened instinctively on the doorknob. She had met Eleanor only a handful of times over the years, always finding her cold, snobbish, and relentlessly judgmental. Daniel and Eleanor had shared a bitter, secretive relationship with their wealthy extended family, frequently scheming for inheritances.

"Eleanor," Valerie said coldly, making no move to invite her inside. "You picked a terrible time for a social visit. If you’re here on Daniel’s behalf, save your breath. He’s where he belongs."

Eleanor let out a sharp, humorless laugh, stepping past Valerie uninvited into the grand foyer. She looked around the opulent entryway with an expression of open disdain.

"I’m not here to plead for my brother, Valerie. Daniel made his bed, and he deserves to lie in it—though he was always an idiot for getting caught," Eleanor said smoothly, turning her piercing gaze onto Valerie. "No, I’m here about something far more valuable. I’m here about the stray animal you’ve invited into your home."

Valerie’s blood ran cold. She stepped into the foyer, blocking Eleanor’s path toward the living room. "Watch your language, Eleanor. Nick is under my legal guardianship.

"Oh, is he?" Eleanor smiled thinly, opening her leather portfolio and pulling out a folded document. "According to state records, Nickolas Hayes is a ward of the state with a complex history of behavioral volatility, property damage, and chronic running. But more importantly... did you know that Nick’s maternal aunt—his only living blood relative—has been searching for him across three states for the past two years?"

Valerie froze. The breath caught in her throat. "His aunt? The social workers told me he had no family left."

"State bureaucracy is notoriously incompetent," Eleanor purred, stepping closer. "And conveniently, I happen to represent her legal interests. If that boy stays here, your ongoing guardianship battle will become a media circus. Every tabloid in the country will paint you as an unstable divorcée hoarding runaway delinquents to spite her incarcerated husband.

At that exact moment, the heavy oak door to the study clicked open, and Nick stepped out into the hallway, holding a stack of school notebooks. He stopped dead in his tracks as his eyes locked onto Eleanor Vance.

Color drained entirely from Nick’s face. He dropped his notebooks, the loud slap of paper echoing through the silent foyer, and began to tremble violently from head to toe.
