Chapter 9 - The Truth Behind the Name

The evening shadows stretched long across the living room rug as Valerie sat at the kitchen island, staring at a stack of background research documents Detective Miller had managed to unearth regarding Eleanor Vance’s sudden reappearance. The house was finally quiet; Thomas had managed to coax Nick upstairs to play video games, successfully distracting the traumatized boy from the afternoon's terrifying encounter.
The front door unlocked softly, and Detective Miller stepped into the kitchen, shaking the light autumn drizzle from his trench coat. He pulled out a chair and sat across from Valerie, dropping a thick manila envelope onto the marble counter.
"You were right to be suspicious of your former sister-in-law, Mrs. Vance," Miller said, opening the folder and sliding out several faded photographs and legal certificates. "Eleanor didn’t just happen to stumble upon Nick’s whereabouts. She’s been tracking him for months—for reasons that go far beyond spite."
Valerie frowned, leaning forward. "What do you mean? What does Eleanor have to do with an orphaned homeless boy?"
"It goes back twelve years," Miller explained, tapping a finger on a birth certificate. "Before Daniel married you, he and Eleanor were involved in a bitter corporate and legal dispute with their own family regarding a massive trust established by their maternal grandfather. A significant portion of that trust was legally tied to a third sibling—a younger sister named Clara Vance."
Valerie’s eyes widened. "Clara? I thought Daniel told me his sister Clara died in a car accident when they were teenagers.
"That was the family cover story," Miller said grimly. "Clara didn’t die. She was disowned and banished from the family after getting pregnant out of wedlock and refusing to sign away her inheritance rights to Daniel and Eleanor. She changed her last name, dropped out of society, and raised her child in absolute obscurity."
Valerie felt the air leave her lungs. She looked slowly toward the ceiling, where Nick’s bedroom was located upstairs.
"Are you saying..."
"Yes," Miller nodded quietly. "Clara Vance was Nick’s mother. Which means Nick isn't just some random homeless street kid you took in out of pity. He is Daniel’s biological nephew—and your late father-in-law’s rightful primary heir to the hidden Vance estate."
The revelation hit Valerie like a physical shockwave. All the pieces of the puzzle clicked together with terrifying precision. Why Daniel had reacted with such visceral panic when he saw Nick in the restaurant; why Eleanor had been tracking the boy with such predatory intensity; why Daniel had targeted Nick in the alleyways months prior.
It wasn't a random encounter in a parking garage. Daniel had known exactly who Nick was. He had been systematically hunting down the remaining heirs to the trust to liquidate every last cent before anyone found out.
"Does Nick know?" Valerie asked, her voice trembling slightly.

"I don’t think so," Miller replied. "He was too young when his mother died, and she kept their lineage a tightly guarded secret to protect him from Daniel and Eleanor. When Clara passed away from an illness three years ago, Nick ended up in the foster system, completely unaware of the multi-million-dollar target painted on his back."
Valerie stood up from the counter, pacing across the hardwood floor. The moral complexity of the situation weighed heavily on her shoulders. She had taken Nick in because he was a brave, battered child who needed sanctuary. Now, she realized he was the center of a brutal family war—and Eleanor Vance was coming to finish what Daniel had started.
