Chapter 16 - Shadows of the Past

Spring arrived in the city, bringing blooming cherry blossoms to the park across the street from Le Miroir and a renewed sense of life to the Vance household. Valerie’s divorce was officially finalized, granting her absolute control over her business, her assets, and her peace of mind. The transition of Nick’s permanent guardianship into her sole legal custody had also been formally signed into law by Judge Harrison, closing the door on any future interference from Eleanor or the state welfare system.
Yet, healing from deep trauma was never a linear path.
One Saturday morning, Valerie woke up to the sound of muffled crying coming from the hallway upstairs. She slipped out of bed quietly, pulling her silk robe around her shoulders, and stepped out onto the landing.
The light under Nick’s bedroom door was still on. The door was cracked open an inch.
Valerie pushed it open gently. Nick was sitting up in bed, his knees pulled tightly to his chest, trembling violently. His eyes were wide and unseeing, locked on the bedroom window where rain lashed against the glass.
"Nick?" Valerie whispered softly, careful not to startle him. She walked slowly across the carpet and sat down on the edge of the mattress.
Nick flinched, gasping for air as his gaze finally snapped to focus on her face. Tears streamed down his cheeks, unchecked. "I... I thought I was back in the alley," he choked out, his voice shaking uncontrollably. "I heard the rain hitting the metal roof of the dumpster... I thought the door was locked... I thought nobody was coming."
Valerie didn’t hesitate. She reached out, pulling the twelve-year-old boy gently into her arms. Nick buried his face in her shoulder, sobbing with all the pent-up terror of the years he had spent surviving alone on the cold streets.
"You’re safe, Nick. You’re right here in your room. I’ve got you," Valerie repeated softly, running a comforting hand through his dark hair.
A moment later, the door creaked wider, and Thomas walked in, rubbing sleep from his eyes. Seeing Nick in distress, Thomas didn't hesitate. He climbed up onto the other side of the bed, wrapping his arms around Nick’s back in a steady, brotherly embrace.
"We’re here, man," Thomas said softly. "You’re never going back there. We promise."

It took nearly an hour for the panic to subside. As Nick’s breathing finally slowed and he drifted into an exhausted sleep, flanked by the two people who had changed his life, Valerie realized something profound.
Physical safety and legal victories were only the first steps. True healing required time, infinite patience, and a family that refused to let go when the darkness tried to creep back in.
