Chapter 17 - New Beginnings

By early summer, the dark days of the past felt like a distant, faded memory, though the lessons learned remained etched into the fabric of the Vance household. Nick had enrolled in Thomas’s private academy, starting the upcoming fall semester as a fully registered sixth-grade student. For the first time in his life, he had his own desk, a locker with his name on it, and a stack of brand-new textbooks that didn't smell like mildew and damp concrete.
The transition wasn't without its hurdles. On his first day of school shopping at the upscale downtown mall, Nick had frozen outside the glass doors of a designer clothing store, his breath catching in his throat as memories of being chased away by security guards rushed back.
Valerie had simply stopped, turned around, and placed her hand gently on his shoulder.
"We go wherever we want, Nick. You own this street just as much as anyone else," she had said with a warm, encouraging smile.
With Thomas pulling him by the sleeve, Nick had stepped inside. By the end of the afternoon, he walked out carrying three bags of clothes, a brand-new backpack, and a quiet, growing sense of dignity.
Back at Le Miroir, business was thriving. Valerie had instituted a monthly community outreach dinner, opening the restaurant’s doors every last Sunday of the month to feed local homeless youth and families in transition—a project Nick had personally helped design and organize.
On a bright Sunday afternoon, as volunteers bustled around the dining room setting out warm meals, Nick stood near the entrance holding a clipboard, checking off names with quiet efficiency. He wore a crisp polo shirt and dark jeans, looking every bit the confident young man he was becoming.
Thomas walked up beside him, holding two glasses of lemonade. He handed one to Nick, grinning. "Not bad, partner. We’ve already fed over a hundred people today."
Nick took the glass, sipping the cold drink as he looked around the bustling room. He remembered what it felt like to be standing outside those very doors—starving, bruised, and terrified of the world.
"It’s weird," Nick murmured quietly, watching a young boy sitting at Table Four eagerly eating a plate of spaghetti. "A few months ago, I thought my entire life was just surviving the next punch. Now... I actually have a future."

Thomas bumped his shoulder playfully against Nick’s. "You didn't just survive, man. You saved us all."
Across the room, Valerie watched the two boys from behind the host stand. A profound sense of peace washed over her. The darkest secrets of her family had been dragged into the light, but out of that wreckage, a stronger, truer family had risen from the ashes.
