Chapter 18 - The Open Chair

Autumn returned to the city, painting the tree-lined avenues in brilliant shades of amber, copper, and gold. Exactly one year had passed since the rainy night when a battered, homeless twelve-year-old boy pushed open the heavy mahogany doors of Le Miroir and changed the course of history.

To celebrate the anniversary, Valerie decided to close the restaurant to the general public for the evening, reserving it exclusively for family and close friends.

The dining room was bathed in the warm, golden glow of candlelight. At the center of the room sat Table Four, covered in pristine white linen and set with polished silverware and two identical plates of steaming, house-made spaghetti.

Detective Miller attended as an honored guest, along with several close colleagues who had helped dismantle Daniel’s criminal empire. But the heart of the room belonged to Valerie, Thomas, and Nick.

Nick now stood tall, his posture confident, his eyes bright and steady. He wore a sharp navy blazer over a crisp white button-down shirt—a stark contrast to the oversized, mud-stained gray hoodie he had worn a year prior.

Valerie stood at the head of the table, raising a crystal glass of sparkling cider. The ambient chatter in the room died down as all eyes turned toward her.

"One year ago today," Valerie began, her voice steady and clear, carrying a quiet emotional weight that moved everyone present, "this restaurant was filled with people wearing expensive masks, myself included. We were living inside a gilded cage of comfortable lies, too afraid to look beneath the surface of our own lives."

She turned her gaze toward Nick, who sat quietly beside Thomas.

"Then Nick walked through that door. He entered appearing to need someone to save him from the cold, the hunger, and the violence of the streets. But as it turned out... he was the one who saved us all."

A warm wave of applause swept through the room. Nick lowered his gaze slightly, a faint blush dusting his cheeks, though a proud smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.

"To courage," Valerie continued, raising her glass higher. "To truth. And to family—not just the blood we are born into, but the family we choose, and the people who teach us that being afraid doesn't mean we have to stay silent."

"To family!" the guests echoed warmly, clinking their glasses together in a symphony of crystal.

As everyone sat down to eat, Thomas looked across the table at Nick, grinning broadly. "Well? Are you going to eat your spaghetti quickly this time, or do we have all night?"

May you like

Nick picked up his fork, twirling the pasta with a relaxed, easy confidence. He looked around the glittering room, meeting the warm, loving gazes of Valerie and Thomas.

"We have all night," Nick smiled. "And nobody is ever going to take it away."
