Chapter 11 - The Courthouse Corridor

The marble corridors of the county courthouse echoed with the sharp clack of hurried footsteps, the hum of nervous murmurs, and the heavy slamming of courtroom doors. It was a place where futures were dismantled and rebuilt in minutes, illuminated by the harsh fluorescent lights overhead.
Valerie walked briskly down the third-floor hallway, flanked by Detective Miller and her lead family law attorney, Marcus Sterling. Behind them walked Thomas, holding tightly to Nick’s hand. Nick wore a clean, tailored navy blazer and slacks—clothes that fit him properly for the first time in his life—though his wide, anxious eyes betrayed the intense dread clawing at his stomach.
"Remember, Nick," Attorney Sterling whispered gently as they approached Courtroom 3B. "You don't have to say anything unless Judge Harrison specifically asks you a direct question. We have the financial audit reports and the recorded testimony ready. We are going to protect you."
Nick nodded mutely, swallowing hard. He kept close to Thomas, drawing quiet strength from the other boy’s unwavering presence.
As they reached the heavy oak doors of Courtroom 3B, they found their path blocked. Leaning against the wall with an air of absolute, chilling confidence was Eleanor Vance. She wore a sharp charcoal pantsuit, her silver-streaked hair pulled back into a severe bun. Beside her stood two high-priced corporate defense attorneys carrying overflowing leather briefcases.
Eleanor stepped forward, her sharp gaze locking instantly onto Nick. A cold, condescending smile played across her lips.
"Well, look at you playing dress-up," Eleanor purred smoothly, loud enough for the passing bailiff to hear. "Putting a stray dog in a tailored suit doesn't change its pedigree, Valerie. You’re fighting a losing battle. The court favors biological family, and everyone knows your household is currently undergoing a explosive, highly unstable legal dissolution."
Valerie didn’t flinch. She stepped forward, her posture rigid, her voice ice-cold. "Your brother is sitting in a jail cell facing federal felony charges, Eleanor. You’re next if you don’t turn around and walk out of this building right now."
Eleanor let out a sharp, amused laugh. "We’ll see who’s laughing when Judge Harrison signs the emergency custody transfer order in ten minutes. That boy belongs to our bloodline. He’s coming home with me."
Before Valerie could retort, the heavy courtroom doors swung open, and the bailiff’s loud, authoritative voice rang out.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Harrison. Courtroom 3B is now in session."
The group filed inside, the heavy doors sealing shut behind them, locking them into a legal battle that would determine the ultimate fate of everyone involved.
