Chapter 8 - Secrets and Bloodlines

The heavy sound of the fallen notebooks echoed through the grand foyer like a gunshot. Nick stood frozen near the study entrance, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The defiant street kid who had faced down Daniel Vance in the parking garage was completely gone, replaced by a terrified twelve-year-old boy staring at a ghost from his deepest nightmares.

Eleanor Vance turned slowly, a predatory smile curling the edges of her thin lips as she looked at Nick.

"Well, well, well," Eleanor murmured, taking a deliberate step toward him. "Look what the street dragged in. You’ve cleaned up nicely, Nickolas. Almost looks like you belong in polite society—until you remember what your family name actually represents."

Valerie moved instantly, stepping between Eleanor and the shaking boy. Her eyes blazed with a protective fury that caused even Eleanor to pause. "Back off, Eleanor. Right now. If you have something to say, you say it to me—not a child."

Eleanor raised an eyebrow, adjusting the lapel of her trench coat. "Protecting your new pet project, are you, Valerie? How touching. But you’re playing a dangerous game with pieces you don’t understand. You think you saved a helpless victim? Ask him who his mother really was. Ask him why he ended up in the foster system in the first place."

Valerie turned her head slightly, looking back at Nick with deep concern. "Nick? What is she talking about?"

Nick pressed his back hard against the wood-paneled wall, sliding down until his knees were pulled tightly against his chest. His arms wrapped around his head as if expecting a physical blow. "Don't let her... please... she’s lying..."

Before Eleanor could press further, heavy, hurried footsteps sounded on the stairs. Thomas rushed down into the foyer, having heard the commotion from his room upstairs. He took in the scene instantly—his mother standing defensive, Eleanor smiling like a shark, and Nick curled up in terror on the floor.

"Get out of our house!" Thomas shouted, his voice cracking with righteous fury as he stepped directly in front of Nick, mimicking the exact stance Nick had taken for him weeks ago.

Eleanor’s smile faltered slightly as she looked at Thomas. A flicker of genuine disgust crossed her features. "Ah, the obedient little spy. You certainly take after your mother—blindly trusting strays while ignoring the rot in your own foundation. Very well. I’ll leave you to play happy families for now.

She turned toward the front door, pulling her leather portfolio tight against her chest. Before stepping out onto the porch, she threw one final, venomous glance over her shoulder.

"Enjoy your little charity project while it lasts, Valerie. But remember—blood always comes home to roost. And the Vance family secrets have a way of dragging everyone down into the mud."

The heavy oak door clicked shut. Silence descended upon the foyer, broken only by Nick’s shallow, ragged breathing.

Valerie dropped to her knees beside the shaking boy, her movements slow and gentle. She didn't try to pull his hands away from his head; she simply waited within arm's reach, offering a steady, unmoving anchor.

"Nick," Valerie whispered softly. "You’re safe here. Nobody is going to hurt you. I promise.

It took several long minutes for the panic to subside. Slowly, Nick lowered his hands, his wide, terrified eyes meeting Valerie’s gaze. A single tear tracked down his dirt-free cheek.

"She... she knows my mother," Nick whispered, his voice barely audible. "She knows why I ran away."

Valerie reached out, gently resting her hand on his shoulder. "You don't have to tell me anything until you're ready, Nick. But whatever happened in your past... it doesn't define who you are now."

Thomas knelt down beside them, placing a reassuring hand on Nick’s arm. "We’ve got your back, Nick. Just like you had mine."

Nick looked at the two of them—the mother and son who had every reason to push him away, yet chose to pull him closer. For the first time, he realized that whatever Eleanor Vance was planning, he wouldn't have to face it alone in the dark anymore.
