Chapter 12 - Inside Courtroom 3B

The courtroom was cavernous, smelling faintly of old paper, polished mahogany, and floor wax. High windows cast long beams of dusty light across the oak benches. Judge Harrison sat elevated behind a massive bench, his expression stern, tired, and utterly unimpressed by the theatrical posturing of the lawyers before him.

"We are here for emergency docket petition Vance-Hayes custody review," Judge Harrison announced, adjusting his reading glasses as he scanned the files. "Mrs. Eleanor Vance petitioner, versus temporary guardian Valerie Vance respondent. Counsel, you may present your opening arguments.

Eleanor’s lead attorney stood up immediately, buttoning his suit jacket with practiced smoothness. He smoothed his tie and addressed the bench with a polished, theatrical baritone.

"Your Honor, the petitioner simply seeks to protect a vulnerable minor child who has tragically fallen into the hands of an unstable, distracted household," the attorney argued, gesturing expansively toward Valerie. "Mrs. Vance is currently undergoing a highly volatile, bitter divorce from her incarcerated husband, and her restaurant business is facing severe financial restructuring. Introducing an unverified, traumatized runaway foster child into such a chaotic environment is an act of extreme negligence. My client, Ms. Eleanor Vance, is a blood relative with the legal standing, financial stability, and moral duty to provide proper care for her nephew, Nickolas Hayes."

A murmur rippled through the gallery. Eleanor sat smugly at the plaintiff’s table, offering the judge a polite, solemn nod of manufactured grief.

Judge Harrison turned his gaze toward Valerie’s legal team, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Mr. Sterling, your response?"

Attorney Sterling rose calmly, buttoning his jacket. He walked slowly toward the center well of the courtroom, holding a thick folder. "With respect, Your Honor, the petitioner’s touching concern for her nephew is an elaborate, highly calculated smokescreen designed to cover up a criminal conspiracy."

Judge Harrison leaned forward, resting his elbows on the mahogany bench. "Explain yourself, counsel."

"Your Honor, we submit Exhibit A through D," Sterling said, signaling Detective Miller, who stepped forward and handed the files directly to the court clerk. "The petitioner, Eleanor Vance, and her incarcerated brother, Daniel Vance, have spent the past two years systematically embezzling and concealing assets from the Vance family trust—an estate of which minor child Nickolas Hayes is the rightful primary legal heir."

Gasps echoed through the gallery. Eleanor’s smug expression vanished instantly, replaced by a flash of genuine panic as she whipped her head around to glare at her own legal team.

"Furthermore," Sterling continued, his voice ringing clearly through the courtroom, "the petitioner’s sudden interest in custody has nothing to do with family welfare. It is a desperate attempt to silence the key witness in federal felony proceedings—the very boy who witnessed Daniel Vance attempting to liquidate the family accounts and who holds the unedited audio recordings of those crimes."

Judge Harrison flipped open the financial audit report Detective Miller had prepared, his eyes scanning the dense columns of shell company transactions and offshore routing numbers. The courtroom fell into a dead, suffocating silence as the gravity of the evidence settled over the room.
