Chapter 11 - The Subpoena at the Gateway

The morning mist hung heavy over the iron gates of the grand Connecticut estate. The massive limestone pillars, once a symbol of Ethan Mercer’s untouchable wealth, now bore a stark, orange federal seizure notice plastered across the brass keypad.
A battered black sedan pulled up to the service entrance. Out stepped Ethan, unshaven, his designer suit rumpled and stained, carrying a cheap cardboard box containing his remaining personal belongings—a few framed photographs, a spare pair of shoes, and a stack of unpaid bills.
Beside him stood Vanessa, wrapped in a threadbare trench coat, her sunglasses hiding her swollen eyes, clutching a designer handbag that no longer held any credit cards or cash.
"This is insane... this can't be happening," Vanessa muttered, her voice trembling with rage and despair as she stared at the padlocked gates. "Where are we supposed to go, Ethan? My parents refuse to take our calls, my friends blocked my number, and we have zero dollars in our accounts!"
Ethan didn't answer. He set his cardboard box down on the cold asphalt, his hands shaking uncontrollably. He pulled out his phone, attempting once more to check his banking app.

A sleek black town car glided silently down the private drive, stopping right in front of the gated entrance. The tinted window lowered smoothly.
Martin Hale peered out from the backseat, looking at Ethan and Vanessa with cold, professional indifference.
"Mr. Mercer, Mrs. Mercer," Martin said evenly. "You are in violation of the federal vacate order. You have two minutes to clear the perimeter."
Ethan lunged forward, grabbing the edge of the car window with desperate, clawing fingers. "Martin! Please! Talk to my mother! Tell her I’m sorry! Tell her I’ll do anything—I’ll work in the warehouses, I’ll sign over every remaining right, just give us an apartment, give us something!"
Martin gently but firmly peeled Ethan’s fingers away from the window frame. "Your mother is currently airborne, Ethan. She is heading to Zurich to finalize the global restructuring of the trust."
Vanessa shrieked, stepping forward and pointing a manicured, trembling finger at the lawyer. "She’s a monster! A ruthless, manipulative old witch! She set us up! She watched us struggle just to destroy us!"

Martin looked at Vanessa with a gaze so chillingly flat it silenced her instantly.
"She didn't set you up, Mrs. Mercer," Martin said softly. "You built your own trap out of arrogance and greed. She simply opened the door and let you walk inside."
