Chapter 12 - Vanessa’s Desperate Gamble

Stripped of their home, their cars, and their social standing, Ethan and Vanessa checked into a rundown roadside motel off the interstate in Bridgeport—a stark, depressing contrast to the multi-million-dollar lifestyle they had squandered.

Vanessa paced the cramped, carpeted room, her heels clicking loudly against the worn linoleum floor, her phone clutched tightly in her hand.

"There has to be a way out, Ethan," Vanessa hissed, stopping to glare at her husband, who sat slumped on the edge of the sagging mattress, staring blankly at the floral wallpaper. "Julian Cross has backup accounts hidden offshore. I know he does! If I can just get to him, if I can convince him to cut a deal with the prosecutors—"

"Julian Cross was arrested at JFK Airport three hours ago trying to board a one-way flight to Rio de Janeiro," Ethan said, his voice completely devoid of life.

Vanessa froze. Her phone slipped from her fingers, hitting the floor with a dull thud. "Arrested...?"

"The federal marshals seized everything," Ethan continued, not even bothering to look up. "His hedge fund, his shell companies, his offshore accounts. We are completely finished, Vanessa. There is no bailout, there is no secret stash. My mother owns every dime of the Mercer estate, and the federal prosecutor is pushing for maximum prison sentences for corporate fraud."

Vanessa’s knees gave out. She slid down the wall until she was sitting on the dirty carpet, burying her face in her hands as silent, bitter tears of utter defeat wracked her body.

For years, she had lorded over Eleanor, treating her like an impoverished servant, sneering at her thrift-store clothes, and mocking her dependency. Now, she was the one sleeping in a roadside motel, facing criminal prosecution, completely destitute and utterly alone.

The arrogance that had fueled her entire life had evaporated into thin air, leaving behind only the cold, crushing reality of her own destruction.
