Chapter 4 - The Country Club Humiliation

Word travels faster in Connecticut’s Gold Coast than a wildfire in dry brush. By noon, the news that Ethan Mercer’s multi-million-dollar estate had been frozen by federal injunction had reached every corner of the Greenwich Country Club.
Vanessa sat at a corner table in the sunroom, her sunglasses shielding her swollen, tear-stained eyes, trying desperately to sip a glass of sparkling water without her hands shaking. Across from her sat Chloe Sterling and Cynthia Vance, two women she had spent years patronizing and treating as social inferiors.
"I simply don't understand why you're sitting here, Vanessa, darling," Cynthia said with a sickeningly sweet smile, leaning across the marble table. "Word is your cards were declined at the Mercedes dealership this morning. Did your husband forget to pay the corporate Amex again?"
Vanessa forced a tight, brittle smile, her fingernails digging deep into her palm beneath the table. "It's a temporary administrative hold, Cynthia. Some absurd mix-up with our wealth management advisors in Zurich. Ethan is handling it right now."
"Right, of course," Chloe chimed in, tossing her blonde curls. "Just like that 'broke, dependent mother-in-law' of yours you kept locked away in the guest cottage. Speaking of Eleanor—where is she today? I haven't seen her around creeping near the garden lately. Did you finally send her off to a state-funded nursing home?"
Vanessa’s stomach churned violently. Only twelve hours ago, she had been laughing about Eleanor being useless and ungrateful. Now, the thought of that quiet, silver-haired woman made her skin crawl with icy dread.
"Eleanor chose to relocate," Vanessa said stiffly, her voice losing its composure. "She has her own... arrangements."
"Oh, how lovely for her," Cynthia purred, exchanging a knowing, venomous glance with Chloe. "Because according to my husband—who sits on the board of the regional banking federation—your husband’s accounts aren't just on 'administrative hold.' They’ve been completely wiped clean and transferred to a sovereign trust held under the name *Eleanor Mercer Holdings*. In fact, darling, the entire mansion you’re sitting in right now legally belongs to an elderly woman who drove an old sedan and wore thrift-store blouses."
Vanessa’s breath hitched. "That's a lie. That's a complete fabrication!"
"Is it?" Chloe laughed, sliding her phone across the table. The screen displayed a breaking financial news bulletin from the *Connecticut Gazette*: *MERCER LOGISTICS HEIR STRIPPED OF ASSETS; EMERGENCY RESTRUCTURING TRIGGERED BY PRIMARY BENEFICIARY.*

Vanessa stared at the headline, the world spinning around her. Her phone buzzed relentlessly in her designer handbag—text messages from debt collectors, angry emails from private school administrators demanding tuition payments, and a curt notification from her personal boutique concierge canceling her VIP membership due to insufficient funds.
She wasn't just broke. She was public property for ridicule.
