Chapter 20 - The Passenger on the Midnight Flight

The rain fell in a steady, rhythmic sheet against the tarmac of John F. Kennedy International Airport as Flight 408 to Zurich prepared for departure.

In seat 14A, by the window, sat Eleanor Mercer.

She wore her signature charcoal wool coat, a simple silk scarf tied neatly around her neck, and her hands rested calmly over a sleek leather briefcase containing the final ledger of the Mercer Trust.

The cabin doors closed with a heavy, secure thud. The engines whined to life, lifting the massive aircraft smoothly off the ground and cutting through the stormy night sky into the vast, quiet expanse above the clouds.

Eleanor turned her head to look out the window. Below her, the glittering lights of the eastern seaboard twinkled like scattered diamonds in the dark—endless, complex, and unpredictable.

She closed her eyes, resting her head against the headrest. She had left behind the guest cottage, the broken glass, the ungrateful son, and the crumbling empire of greed. Ahead of her lay the silent, snow-capped peaks of the Alps and a world waiting to be shaped by those who understood the true cost of power.

The plane banked gently toward the east, disappearing into the midnight horizon as the story—and the legacy—continued into the open night.
