Chapter 16 - The Auction of the Connecticut Mansion

The expansive, multi-million-dollar Greenwich estate where Ethan and Vanessa had once thrown lavish dinner parties and lorded their wealth over others was now the site of a very different kind of gathering.
Under a large white marquee set up on the manicured lawn, an official federal auctioneer stood behind a polished podium, holding a wooden gavel aloft.
"Lot number one: The primary residential estate, including all remaining architectural furnishings and land deeds," the auctioneer announced, his voice booming through the outdoor speakers. "Opening bid set by the federal receivership at twelve million dollars."
Seated in the front row of folding chairs, watching the proceedings in absolute silence, were dozens of Connecticut’s elite, real estate moguls, and curious onlookers. Among them, sitting quietly in the back row wearing her signature charcoal wool coat and silk scarf, was Eleanor.
She watched as billionaire developers and corporate executives raised their numbered paddles, bidding millions for the very house where her son had attempted to strip her of her dignity.
"Going once... going twice... sold to Horizon Global Holdings for fourteen point five million dollars!"
*Bang.*
The wooden gavel struck the podium.
The house Ethan had claimed as his absolute dominion, the estate where he had smugly watched Vanessa mock her mother-in-law, was gone—wiped clean from their ledger forever.

As the crowd began to disperse, Martin Hale walked up beside Eleanor, holding her coat. "The proceeds from the auction have been fully deposited into the Mercer Foundation account, Madam Chair. Not a single cent remains linked to Ethan's former assets."
Eleanor stood up, buttoning her coat against the crisp autumn breeze. "Good," she said softly. "Let the foundation be a reminder that wealth without character is merely borrowed time."
