Chapter 6 - The Auditor’s Arrival

Ethan sat at the massive mahogany desk in his corporate office on the top floor of Mercer Global Logistics, his head buried in his hands. The heavy oak doors burst open without a knock.

His Chief Financial Officer, David Vance, rushed into the room, looking as though he had seen a ghost.

"Ethan! We have a catastrophic situation," David panted, dropping a thick stack of printed financial audit reports onto the desk.

Ethan didn't look up, his voice hollow and defeated. "Don't tell me. The federal freeze order hasn't lifted."

"It's worse than an asset freeze, Ethan. Much worse," David said, his hands shaking as he adjusted his tie. "At 8:00 a.m., an independent forensic audit team dispatched directly by the Mercer Trust arrived at the corporate compliance desk. They didn't just audit our quarterly earnings—they subpoenaed every single ledger, expense report, and subsidiary transfer from the last five years."

Ethan slowly raised his head, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. "What are you talking about? I am the senior vice president! I authorized those operational budgets!"

"That's just it, Ethan," David swallowed hard. "According to the corporate charter filed by your father in 1998, no officer—not even you—has the authority to reallocate capital reserves without the direct countersignature of the primary settlor: Eleanor Mercer."

Ethan’s jaw dropped. "My mother? My mother doesn't know a balance sheet from a grocery list! She spent her days gardening and reading romance novels in that damn cottage!"

"That was an act, Ethan!" David shouted, losing his professional composure. "The audit team uncovered a master ledger that proves Eleanor Mercer was not only a Harvard-educated corporate economist before she married your father, but she also personally engineered the entire capital structure of Mercer Logistics! Every patent, every offshore acquisition, every strategic alliance—she designed it all! And for the last three years, while you treated her like an impoverished charity case, she was legally building an ironclad paper trail of every single corporate policy violation, unauthorized bonus, and embezzlement scheme you and Vanessa pulled!"

Ethan leaped out of his chair, knocking his leather executive seat backward onto the floor. "Embezzlement? Are you out of your mind? I’m the heir!"

"You're not an heir, Ethan," a cool, unfamiliar voice echoed from the doorway.

Ethan spun around. Standing in the entrance was a sharp-eyed woman in a tailored navy pantsuit, holding a leather briefcase embossed with the seal of the Federal Court. Behind her stood two armed security guards and Martin Hale.

"Allow me to introduce myself," the woman said, stepping into the office with absolute authority. "I am Special Prosecutor Victoria Vance, appointed by the federal district court to oversee the receivership of Mercer Global Logistics. Effective immediately, Ethan Mercer is suspended from all executive duties, stripped of all voting shares, and formally placed under criminal investigation for corporate fraud and elder abuse."
