Chapter 2 - The Sunrise Notice

The morning sunlight hit the glass table on the patio, casting glittering patterns across the manicured lawn. Ethan poured himself a cup of imported Blue Mountain coffee, wearing a silk robe that cost more than my monthly grocery budget back when I pretended to be poor.

Vanessa strolled out, her blonde hair perfectly styled, scrolling through her iPad with an expression of mild annoyance.

"Did Eleanor leave yet?" she asked, taking a sip from her porcelain cup. "If she leaves a mess in that cottage, I'm billing her for the cleanup."

"She’ll be gone," Ethan muttered, sitting down across from her. "The old woman knows when she's beaten. Without our charity, she'd be sleeping on a park bench in Bridgeport within forty-eight hours. Honestly, keeping her around for three years was an act of extreme patience on our part."

"Too much patience," Vanessa agreed, tapping her screen. "Especially since we need that cottage land cleared out before the landscape architect arrives next Tuesday for the pool pavilion expansion."

Just then, the security gate at the front of the estate buzzed loudly.

Ethan frowned. "Who the hell is at the gate at seven in the morning? Did you order more designer patio furniture?"

"No," Vanessa said, her brow furrowing. "Maybe it's the delivery for the kitchen remodel."

Ethan stood up, slipping his phone into his pocket, and walked toward the intercom by the main entrance. He pressed the speaker button with an arrogant smirk. "This is Ethan Mercer. Make it quick; I'm busy."

"Mr. Ethan Mercer?" a crisp, emotionless voice crackled through the speaker. "This is Officer Miller of the Connecticut State Police, accompanied by federal bailiff Marcus Vance. We have an emergency injunction and asset freeze order issued by the Mercer Estate Trust."

Ethan’s smirk vanished instantly. A cold line appeared between his eyebrows. "An injunction? What kind of ridiculous nonsense is this? This is private property. Identify yourselves or I'll have my security team remove you."

"Sir, you are in violation of federal asset preservation order #992-B," the bailiff's voice cut in sharply. "Effective immediately, all residential properties, corporate accounts, subsidiary investments, and credit lines associated with Ethan Mercer and Vanessa Mercer are frozen under court seal. You are ordered to cease all occupancy and commercial activity on the premises pending audit."

Ethan’s coffee mug slipped from his hand, shattering against the stone tiles, dark liquid splashing across his bare feet. "Frozen? Are you insane? Do you know who I am? I am the senior vice president of Mercer Global Logistics! My accounts are worth millions!"

"Your corporate salary has been suspended, Mr. Mercer," the bailiff replied calmly. "Furthermore, the primary holding entity—The Mercer Trust—has exercised its sovereign revocation clause. You have twenty minutes to vacate the main residence."

Vanessa dropped her iPad, her face turning chalk-white. "Ethan... what is happening? What are they talking about?"

Ethan didn't answer. He turned frantically toward the guest cottage at the back of the lawn, his heart hammering against his ribs. He punched the digital access code into his smartphone to check his mobile banking app.

"No," Ethan whispered, his hands trembling violently as he stared at the glowing screen. "No, no, no... this is impossible."
