Chapter 18 - The Ultimate Revelation of the Mercer Trust

Back in Zurich, the senior directors of the Mercer Trust gathered in the grand walnut-paneled boardroom for the final ratification of the global restructuring.
On the mahogany table rested the original parchment deeds signed by Arthur and Eleanor Mercer over four decades ago.
The presiding director stood up, addressing the board with solemn respect. "With the full recovery of twenty-one million dollars in liquid assets, the successful prosecution of corporate co-conspirators, and the complete reconstitution of our philanthropic charter, the Mercer Trust is hereby designated as an independent, sovereign endowment dedicated exclusively to global economic literacy and ethical corporate governance."
He turned his gaze toward Eleanor, who sat at the head of the table.
"Madam Chair, under your direct leadership, the trust has emerged stronger, wiser, and more secure than at any point in its history. What are your final instructions regarding the remaining operating reserves?"
Eleanor opened a sleek leather folder, sliding a formal legal directive across the table.
"Allocate forty percent to international education grants for underprivileged youth," Eleanor instructed calmly. "Allocate thirty percent to independent forensic auditing firms dedicated to exposing corporate corruption."
The director nodded, recording her instructions. "And the remaining thirty percent?"

Eleanor paused for a moment, her thoughts drifting briefly to the cold prison cell in Connecticut, to the shattered glass on the terrace, and to the long, quiet years she spent waiting in the guest cottage.
"Place the remaining thirty percent into an unyielding perpetual reserve," Eleanor said softly, her voice steady and resolute. "For future generations who may need to learn that blood is never a substitute for integrity."
