Chapter 9 - The Confession of Marcus Vance

The federal holding facility in downtown Hartford was cold, sterile, and reeked of industrial disinfectant. Inside interrogation room B, Marcus Vance—the federal bailiff who had served Ethan’s initial asset freeze order—sat across the metal table from Special Prosecutor Victoria Vance.
Marcus slid a thick manila folder across the stainless-steel table.
"You wanted the full financial trail of the secondary offshore transfers?" Marcus asked, his tone flat and professional. "Here it is. Every wire, every shell corporation, and every illicit kickback."
Victoria opened the folder, scanning the dense columns of banking data. Her eyes narrowed as she spotted a familiar name at the bottom of the ledger. "Julian Cross. The hedge fund manager. He was laundering Vanessa Mercer’s embezzled funds through a fake tech startup in the Cayman Islands."
"Not just laundering," Marcus corrected, leaning back and crossing his arms. "Julian and Vanessa were working together to systematically bleed Mercer Logistics dry over the last eighteen months. They planned to manufacture a corporate default, force a fire-sale liquidation, and scoop up the company's core patents for pennies on the dollar."
Victoria looked up sharply. "And Eleanor Mercer? How long did she know about this?"
A faint, respectful smile touched the corners of Marcus’s mouth. "Mrs. Mercer knew before they even made their first move. Remember, she didn't just stumble into poverty by accident three years ago. She suspected internal financial betrayal within the family after her husband died. She used herself as bait. She moved into that guest cottage, wore thrift-store clothes, and let Ethan and Vanessa treat her like dirt, all while quietly monitoring every single transaction through an encrypted terminal in her floor safe."

"That’s... diabolical," Victoria whispered, a mixture of awe and shock in her voice. "She sacrificed her own comfort and dignity for three years just to catch them red-handed?"
"She didn't sacrifice her dignity, Counselor," Marcus replied quietly. "She preserved her family's legacy. And she taught her son a lesson in humility that no court in the land could ever deliver."
