Chapter 8 - The Family Dinner Trap

The autumn wind whipped through the towering oak trees outside the sprawling Greenwich estate, rattling the glass panes of the grand dining room. But inside, there was no warmth, no laughter, and no feast.
Vanessa sat alone at the massive 12-seat mahogany dining table, staring blindly at a single cold plate of leftover toast and a glass of tap water. The electricity in the east wing had been shut off due to unpaid utility bills, and the household staff had all resigned two days prior after their back pay bounced.
The heavy front door clicked open. Heavy footsteps echoed down the marble foyer.
Ethan walked into the dining room, his tie loose, his suit jacket wrinkled, and his face a mask of hollow despair. He looked ten years older than he had a week ago.
"Did you reach your father’s old college roommate? The federal judge?" Vanessa snapped, her voice shrill and desperate as she sprang up from her chair. "Did you fix this? My credit cards are blacklisted, the bank repossessed my BMW this afternoon, and a bailiff served us with a formal eviction notice to vacate this property within forty-eight hours!"
Ethan stopped dead in his tracks. He stared at Vanessa with a look of such profound, venomous hatred that she instinctively took a step back.
"Fix it?" Ethan let out a harsh, broken laugh that sounded like breaking glass. "There is nothing to fix, Vanessa. My mother—the woman you called 'broke, useless, and ungrateful'—owns every square inch of this estate, every share of Mercer Logistics, and every cent in every bank account we ever touched."
"Then sue her!" Vanessa screamed, hysteria bubbling over the edge. "Claim she’s mentally incompetent! Get a doctor to sign off on elder abuse! She’s an old woman!"
"She is a Harvard-trained economist and the sole settlor of a sovereign irrevocable trust that has protected our family’s wealth for four generations," Ethan hissed, slamming his fist against the dining table with a force that rattled the silverware. "And she has spent the last three years recording every single insult, every single fraudulent document, and every single act of cruelty you and I inflicted upon her!"
Vanessa’s knees buckled. She grabbed the edge of the table to steady herself, her face draining of all color. "Wh... what happens to us now?"
Before Ethan could answer, the heavy double doors of the dining room swung wide open.

Standing in the doorway were two federal marshals, flanked by Martin Hale.
"Ethan Mercer and Vanessa Mercer," Martin announced, his voice echoing coldly through the grand room. "You are hereby ordered to surrender all remaining personal property, keys, and security tokens to the court-appointed receivership. The eviction is immediate."
