Chapter 10 - The Betrayal Within

The rain had finally stopped, leaving the streets of Chicago slick and reflective under the yellow glow of the streetlights. Inside the private study at the Vance estate, the air was quiet, broken only by the soft ticking of a grandfather clock.
David sat at his mahogany desk, staring at a encrypted laptop screen. Beside him stood Marcus, holding a fresh file folder stamped with red top-secret seals.
"We swept Julian’s communications after the Pier 42 bust," Marcus said, his voice unusually low. "We found something that doesn't make sense, Mr. Vance."
David raised his eyes. "What is it?"
"Julian knew the exact patrol schedule of our security team at Blackwood Manor three nights ago," Marcus revealed, opening the file to reveal a set of internal security logs. "The leak didn't come from a hack or a wiretap. Someone inside our immediate inner circle was transmitting real-time tracking coordinates to Julian’s personal server."
David felt a cold knot tighten in his stomach. "Who had access to those coordinates, Marcus? Only four people in this company held those clearance codes."
Marcus hesitated, taking a deep breath before laying a second document onto the desk. It was a wire transfer slip showing two hundred thousand dollars deposited into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.
"It was Thomas," Marcus said softly. "Your senior administrative assistant."
David leaned back in his chair, a look of profound disappointment washing over his face. Thomas had been his personal assistant for five years. He had managed David's schedules, organized foundation dinners, and even brought Toby hot meals during the initial investigation.
"Bring him in," David said quietly.
Two minutes later, Thomas walked into the study, flanked by two security guards. His head was lowered, his hands trembling so violently he could barely hold his tablet.
"David... I... I can explain," Thomas stammered, his voice choked with emotion.
David didn't yell or slam his desk. He simply pointed to the leather chair across from him. "Sit down, Thomas. And tell me why my sister's memory and Arthur's sacrifice were worth two hundred thousand dollars to you."
Thomas dropped into the chair, burying his face in his hands as quiet sobs racked his frame. "They have my daughter, David! Evelyn found out six months ago that my nine-year-old daughter, Lily, has a rare leukemia strain. The experimental therapy in Switzerland costs fifty thousand dollars a month. I didn't have the money!"
Thomas looked up, tears streaming down his face. "Evelyn came to me with the transfer papers. She said if I didn't feed them the security routes, she would drop Lily from the specialized foundation program. I was desperate, David! I swear on my life I never wanted anyone to get hurt!"
Silence fell over the room. David looked at Thomas, seeing not a mastermind criminal, but a desperate father backed into an impossible corner by heartless monsters.
David stood up, walked around the desk, and pulled a clean pen from his pocket. He pushed a fresh document toward Thomas.
"Lily’s medical care at the Geneva Clinic was fully paid in perpetuity as of nine o'clock this morning," David said gently.
Thomas stared at him in utter disbelief. "What... what did you say?"
"I funded her medical trust through the Vance Children's Foundation," David explained, his voice warm with forgiveness. "No child will ever be used as leverage while I breathe. But I need you to do something for me, Thomas."

Thomas wiped his tears frantically, nodding over and over. "Anything, David! Anything you ask!"
"Julian thinks you are still his mole," David said, a brilliant, dangerous spark flashing in his dark eyes. "He is going to call you from his holding cell tonight to ask for the master server restart sequence. And you are going to give him exactly what I tell you to give him."
