Chapter 17 - The Federal Audit

Three months later, the federal court proceedings against Evelyn Vance came to their final, decisive conclusion.
Inside the Cook County Federal Courthouse, Judge Thomas Abernathy sat behind the high bench, reviewing the pre-sentencing reports. Evelyn Vance stood at the defense podium wearing a dull orange prison jumpsuit, her hair tied back simply, no makeup, no designer jewelry.
"Mrs. Evelyn Vance," Judge Abernathy read aloud. "You have been convicted of attempted murder, grand larceny, corporate espionage, and federal wire fraud. Do you have anything to say before sentence is pronounced?"
Evelyn stepped toward the microphone. She looked toward the prosecution gallery, where David and Toby sat quietly.
"I have spent my entire life chasing power and money, thinking it would make me untouchable," Evelyn said, her voice small, raspy, but genuine for the first time in her life. "I was wrong. I hurt the people who trusted me most, and I attempted to destroy a innocent child. I accept my punishment, and I ask for David and Toby’s forgiveness, though I know I do not deserve it."
Judge Abernathy nodded slowly. "In light of your full cooperation in dismantling Sen. Harrison Vance's political network, this court sentences you to fifteen years at the federal correctional institution in Pekin, Illinois, without eligibility for early parole."
Evelyn bowed her head as the bailiffs quietly led her away through the side door. She turned once to look at David, nodding a quiet, respectful goodbye.
Outside the courthouse, the crisp autumn air was filled with yellow and orange leaves floating gently from the trees. Reporters surged forward, but David raised his hand, offering a brief statement.
"Justice was served today," David told the press. "The darkness that hung over our family has been lifted. We are moving forward to build a world where truth and integrity matter."
As they walked toward their car, Toby pulled a small silver medal from his jacket—an academic award he had won at the Tech Academy that morning for top honors in mechanical engineering.

"Look, Uncle David!" Toby beamed, holding up the medal. "Dr. Aris said my motor design was approved for the state science fair!"
David laughed, lifting Toby into a warm bear hug. "I never had any doubt, kiddo. Let's go home and celebrate."
