Chapter 18 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Winter gave way to spring, and the Vance estate underwent a complete, magnificent transformation. The cold stone walls and heavy iron gates that once symbolized secrecy and fear were replaced with open green gardens, vibrant flower beds, and solar glass panels.
The estate’s grand lower garage—where the Maybach had once leaked oil onto the gravel—was converted into the Arthur Miller Technological Innovation Center, a state-of-the-art laboratory for young student engineers from around the country.
On a bright sunny Saturday afternoon, David stood in the courtyard watching twenty young children in lab coats building miniature solar boats near the fountain.
Marcus walked up beside David, holding a warm cup of coffee and a clipboard. "The first quarter reports for the Miller-Vance Foundation are in, David. We've funded sixty-two children's clinics across the Midwest and provided full college scholarships to over five hundred underprivileged engineering students."
David smiled, looking around the bustling, joyous estate. "My father always said money is like water, Marcus. If you dam it up for yourself, it rots. But if you let it flow, it brings life everywhere it touches."
Toby ran out of the primary workshop, covered in clean blue paint, holding a high-tech drone model with four glowing rotors.
"Uncle David! Watch this!" Toby yelled excitedly.
With a press of a thumb controller, the drone lifted smoothly into the clear blue sky, executing flawless flips and maneuvers above the fountain as the young students cheered and applauded.
David walked over to Toby, placing a hand on his shoulder as they watched the drone fly high into the sunshine. "Your dad’s design, Toby?"

"Dad’s design, with my modifications!" Toby grinned proudly.
"It’s perfection, Toby," David said gently. "Absolute perfection."
