Chapter 5 - A Trap Set in Silk

The rain poured relentlessly over downtown Chicago as the heavy doors of the Cook County Courthouse opened. Evelyn Vance emerged onto the steps, flanked by four high-priced defense attorneys in tailored wool coats. Despite the charges hanging over her head, she wore a pristine lavender suit, her hair styled to perfection, a subtle, triumphant smile lingering on her lips.

A sea of news reporters surged forward, camera flashes illuminating the rainy twilight like lightning strikes.

"Mrs. Vance! Did you order the sabotage on your husband's vehicle?"

"Is it true that you were working with Julian Vance?"

Evelyn stopped before the microphones, assuming an posture of fragile innocence. "My husband has suffered a tragic mental breakdown following the stress of corporate restructuring," she said smoothly into the array of news mics. "He has fallen under the influence of dangerous conspiracy theories. I love David deeply, and I pray he gets the psychological help he desperately needs. I am fully cooperating with authorities to clear my good name."

Ten miles away, in a private suite at the Grand Metropolitan Hotel, David watched the live news broadcast on a flat-screen monitor. His expression was made of carved granite as he adjusted his cufflinks.

"She plays the victim so naturally," Marcus muttered, standing near the window with a pair of binoculars focused on the street below. "The judge set her bail at five million dollars, paid instantly by an anonymous Swiss trust. Julian has deep pockets."

"It wasn't just bail," David said softly. "Evelyn knows that tonight is the annual Vance Charity Gala at the Grand Metropolitan. Every major investor, politician, and judge in the state will be in that ballroom. She intends to use the event to publicly strip my executive credibility before I can file the federal indictments."

Toby looked up from the table, where he was busy re-soldering a tiny circuit board from his father’s workshop. "Mr. Vance, if she goes to the gala, she'll try to retrieve the physical signet key. Dad said she kept a duplicate key hidden inside her emerald necklace."

David turned to the boy, astonished once again by his keen insight. "The signet key... of course. The digital code in the server room was only half the puzzle. To open the physical vault at Blackwood Manor, you need the mechanical signet ring my father gave her on their wedding day."

"Are we going to the gala?" Toby asked, his gray eyes burning with determination.

"We are," David said. "But we aren't going as victims. We are going as the rightful heirs of Vance Logistics."

Two hours later, the Grand Ballroom of the Grand Metropolitan Hotel was packed with six hundred of the city’s most powerful figures. Crystal chandeliers cast warm golden light over tables adorned with white orchids and champagne towers. Evelyn Vance reigned supreme at the center table, surrounded by city council members and wealthy venture capitalists who bought into her narrative of corporate martyrdom.

Suddenly, the heavy doors of the ballroom swung open. The string quartet paused for a fraction of a second as David Vance entered the room. Beside him walked Toby, dressed in a sharp black child's tuxedo, his posture dignified and calm.

A wave of gasps and hushed whispers rippled through the elite crowd. Evelyn's smile tightened, her fingers gripping her champagne glass so hard the thin crystal creaked.

David walked directly toward Evelyn’s table, ignoring the staring socialites. He stopped five feet from his wife, his dark eyes locking onto hers with cold, uncompromising precision.

"Evelyn," David said, his voice carrying clearly across the quieted ballroom. "You look remarkably well for someone facing twenty years in federal penitentiary for attempted murder."

Evelyn rose gracefully from her seat, clutching her pearl purse to her chest. "David, darling, please don't make a scene. The police are already monitoring your erratic behavior. You shouldn't even be around this child without social services present."

"This child is Arthur Miller’s son," David announced loudly, turning to address the entire ballroom. "The son of the chief engineer whose life was stolen to build the illegal offshore accounts you and Julian Vance operated for seven years."

Murmurs of shock swept through the crowd. Several prominent investors exchanged nervous glances.

Evelyn stepped closer to David, her voice dropping into a venomous whisper meant only for him. "You think you're clever, David? You have nothing. By midnight, Julian will hold the physical deed to Blackwood Manor. You're standing in a sinking ship."

"Then why are your hands trembling, Evelyn?" David asked softly.

Toby stepped forward smoothly, his eyes fixed on the gleaming emerald pendant resting against Evelyn’s neck. "Because she knows the signet key around her neck is missing its core chip. I took it out of her jewelry box yesterday before I ran across the gravel."

Evelyn’s hand flew to her neck in absolute terror. She reached for the pendant, opening the secret latch—only to find it completely empty.

Her face drained of all color as David leaned in close. "The game is over, Evelyn. Let's see how long Julian stays loyal when he realizes you brought him an empty shell."
