Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Machine

The crimson glow of the emergency backup lights painted the eighty-story tower in eerie shades of shadow. Sirens whined in the distance as the high-speed elevators ground to a complete halt between floors. Panic began to break out among the board members, who stumbled toward the exit doors in complete disarray.

"Stay calm!" Marcus shouted, drawing his sidearm and standing in front of David and Toby. "The power grid didn't fail from the outside. Someone triggered an internal kill-switch in the sub-basement!"

Toby grabbed David's sleeve, his eyes wide in the gloom. "Mr. Vance! The logic bomb! My dad told me about this! If the main power cuts while the server registry is updating, the automated firewall collapses! They aren't trying to escape—they're stealing the entire global index right now!"

David's mind raced. Julian wasn't just trying to destroy David socially; he was executing a digital heist of unprecedented scale. If the core algorithms were wiped, Vance Logistics would lose tracking of over ten thousand cargo ships across six oceans, causing instant global bankruptcy.

"Marcus, get the board members secured in the panic room on floor seventy-nine," David ordered briskly. "Toby and I are going down to the physical server farm in Sub-Level 4."

"Sir, that's forty floors down through dark stairwells!" Marcus protested. "Julian’s mercenaries could be waiting in the maintenance shafts!"

"If we wait for the power to restore, the company will be dead before the lights turn back on," David said grimly. "Take two guards. Let's go."

They moved into the central concrete fire stairwell, their flashlights cutting narrow beams through the heavy gloom. The sound of their boots echoed rhythmically as they rushed down the endless flights of stairs. Toby kept pace effortlessly, his light frame agile, his memory of his father's blueprints keeping them on the fastest route.

By the time they reached Sub-Level 4, the air was thick with the scent of ozone and overheating computer processors. The server room was a vast, cavernous hall filled with thousands of glowing blue towers, but half of the racks were flashing amber, indicating rapid data purge.

At the central terminal stood two men in black tactical gear, plug-in drives attached directly to the master mainframe. Sitting on a stool beside them, holding a handheld radio, was Julian’s chief operative—a scarred man known only as Cross.

"You're too late, Mr. Vance," Cross said with a cold, metallic chuckle, raising a suppressed pistol toward David's chest. "The override sequence is ninety percent complete. In two minutes, every operational contract owned by your father will belong to Julian’s offshore consortium."

David stepped in front of Toby, keeping his posture calm and unbothered. "Julian promised you ten million dollars, didn't he, Cross? Do you really think he’s going to let you walk out of this country with that money once the federal wire fraud charges hit?"

Cross smirked. "Julian pays on time. You, on the other hand, are out of time."

Suddenly, Toby slid under David's arm, dropping to his knees on the slick tile floor. With incredible precision, he jammed a small copper jumper cable—taken from his father’s old tool kit—into the auxiliary terminal port near the baseboard.

"Now, Mr. Vance! Hit the manual release valve!" Toby screamed.

David didn't hesitate. He swung his heavy metal briefcase with full force, smashing the red glass emergency fire-suppression lever on the wall. Instantaneously, heavy carbon-dioxide mist roared from the ceiling nozzles with a deafening blast.

Cross fired two wild shots into the fog, but the freezing gas blinded him instantly. Marcus lunged through the mist, disarming Cross with a heavy tactical blow to the wrist. The two mercenaries were tackled to the floor by David's security team within seconds.

Toby scrambled to the primary console, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with terrifying speed. "Bypassing secondary pressure... shorting the main grid... loading Dad's restore key... NOW!"

A massive, electric hum reverberated through the concrete floor. The server racks flashed from warning amber back to bright, solid green. High above them, the tower's main power grid roared back to life, flooding the basement with brilliant white light.

David knelt beside Toby, who was panting, a proud, exhausted smile across his dirty face. The master drive was safe. But as David looked at Cross being handcuffed, the operative looked up with a bloody grin.

"Enjoy the victory, Vance," Cross spat. "Evelyn just made bail. And Julian is already at Blackwood Manor."
