Chapter 9 - Midnight at Pier 42

The midnight fog hung thick over Pier 42 at the Port of Chicago. Towering shipping cranes stood like giant skeletal beasts against the dark sky, their mechanical gears grinding as massive steel containers were hoisted from cargo ships onto the concrete docks.

A fleet of three unmarked black delivery vans pulled into the restricted terminal zone, their lights turned off. Out stepped ten armed men wearing night-vision goggles, led by Julian’s top field commander, a mercenary known as Knox.

Despite being released on strict house arrest with electronic ankle monitoring following the explosive courtroom revelation, Julian Vance was not a man to wait for trial. He had ordered his remaining loyalists to execute a daring midnight heist: seize Container 884—the container holding forty million dollars in unscripted bearer bonds and prototype telemetry hardware.

From high inside the crane control tower overlooking the pier, David Vance watched the tactical display on Marcus's handheld monitor.

"They fell for the bait, Mr. Vance," Marcus whispered, adjusting his sniper scope through the tower glass. "Julian’s team thinks Container 884 is scheduled for export to Hamburg at 1:00 AM."

David stood beside Marcus, his heavy coat collar turned up against the freezing lake breeze. "Julian is desperate. He knows that once the grand jury issues the formal treason indictments on Monday, his global assets will be permanently frozen. He needs those bearer bonds to buy passage to a non-extradition country."

Below on the dock, Knox gestured to his men. Using heavy hydraulic plasma cutters, two mercenaries began slicing through the reinforced steel lock of Container 884. Sparks showered across the dark wet asphalt like blinding fireworks.

With a loud screeching groan, the heavy doors of Container 884 swung open. Knox thrust his powerful tactical flashlight into the dark interior—and froze.

The container was completely empty, except for a single high-definition digital monitor mounted in the center, glowing with a bright white background. Displayed on the screen in massive bold text was a message:

"GAME OVER, JULIAN."

Before Knox could shout an alarm, blinding floodlights mounted on four surrounding crane towers slammed on simultaneously, illuminating the dock in brilliant, daylight-like radiance. Sirens wailed across the harbor as six Coast Guard cutter vessels cut through the fog, blocking every sea escape route.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Hands in the air!" a loudspeaker boomed across the pier.

Panic erupted among Knox’s men. Weapons were raised, and a violent firefight broke out between the mercenaries and federal tactical teams taking cover behind rows of shipping containers. Heavy gunfire echoed across the water as bullets punched through steel walls.

From his hidden vantage point inside a black sedan parked half a mile away outside the pier gates, Julian Vance watched the floodlights flare through his binoculars. His teeth ground together in murderous frustration.

"Drive! Drive now!" Julian screamed at his driver, slamming his hand against the leather headrest.

The sedan roared to life, tires screeching as it spun around to flee into the dark industrial streets. But as the car accelerated down the narrow access road, a massive heavy-duty tow truck surged out from an alleyway, T-boning the sedan with crushing force.

The sedan spun wildly across the asphalt, crashing into a stack of wooden pallets before grinding to a halt, smoke pouring from its smashed hood.

David Vance stepped out of the cab of the tow truck, holding an iron wrench in his hand. He walked slowly toward the steaming wreckage of the sedan, his face calm, cold, and utterly terrifying.

Julian kicked the crumpled passenger door open, stumbling out onto the pavement, his forehead bleeding, his pistol drawn with a shaking hand. "Get away from me, David! I'll kill you! I swear to God I'll kill you!"

May you like

David didn't even pause. He walked right through Julian’s aim, knocked the pistol from Julian's hand with a single, precise strike of the wrench, and grabbed Julian by his lapels, pinning him hard against the smoking hood of the car.

"You took my father’s company, Julian," David said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that chilled Julian to the bone. "You murdered Arthur Miller. You tried to destroy a eight-year-old child. And now, you are going to pay for every single drop of blood you spilled."
