Chapter 12 - Echoes from the Past

The subterranean vault beneath the Vance estate was cold, quiet, and shrouded in darkness. Moisture dripped from the ancient stone ceiling, dripping rhythmically onto the flagstone floor.
A single beam of a flashlight cut through the damp gloom as Evelyn Vance crept down the spiral stone staircase. Having posted bail using a secondary hidden offshore account before the stock crash, she had broken into the main estate grounds while the guards were deployed downtown.
She clutched a heavy crowbar in her hand, her eyes frantic, her purple designer dress torn and filthy. She knew that with Harrison's arrest and Julian’s capture at the pier, her time was up. Her only chance at survival was the physical box of unlisted bearer bonds stored in the original family safe behind the brick wall.
Evelyn reached the master steel door of the vault, jamming her crowbar into the seam with desperate, frantic strength. "Open, damn you! Open!" she screamed under her breath.
"It won't open with a crowbar, Evelyn," a calm, deep voice echoed from the top of the stone stairs.
Evelyn gasped, spinning around, raising the iron crowbar like a weapon. Standing in the doorway above was David Vance, bathed in the soft warm light of the hallway lamp.
"Get back!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice echoing wildly off the damp stone walls. "I’m taking what belongs to me! I gave six years of my life to this pathetic family! I deserve that money!"
David slowly walked down the stone steps, entirely unbothered by her weapon. "You gave six years to lie, cheat, and plot murder. My father trusted you, Evelyn. I trusted you when I married you. And you sold every piece of this family to Julian and Harrison for cheap power."
"Julian promised me total control!" Evelyn wept hysterically, her hands trembling as she held the crowbar. "He said you were weak! He said you didn't have what it takes to rule an empire!"
"Strength isn't about cruelty, Evelyn," David said softly, stopping three feet from her. "Strength is protecting those who cannot protect themselves. Something you and Julian will never understand."
Evelyn dropped her head, her knees buckling as she collapsed onto the cold wet stone floor, sobbing violently. The illusion of her glamour, her wealth, and her social power had completely shattered.
"Please, David..." she whimpered, looking up at him with bloodshot eyes. "Don't let them put me in prison... I'm afraid of the dark... please..."
David looked down at the woman who had tried to cut his brakes on the canyon road, feeling no hatred, only a deep, profound pity for a life consumed by greed.
Two female federal marshals stepped down the stairs, quietly stepping forward to handcuff Evelyn and lift her from the floor.
"Take her," David said softly to the officers. "Make sure she gets a fair trial."
As Evelyn was escorted up into the light, David turned to the vault door. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his father’s original silver pocket watch, and pressed the winding stem three times.

With a heavy, satisfying metallic click, the ancient steel vault door swung open smoothly, revealing not gold or money, but rows of bound legal journals containing Arthur Miller’s complete, untainted clean-energy blueprints.
David smiled softly, touching the leather bindings. "Your legacy is safe now, Arthur."
