Chapter 2 - The Shadows of Vance Logistics

The heavy iron doors of the Cook County holding facility slammed shut behind Evelyn Vance, the cold metallic echo reverberating through the sterile white corridor. Even in handcuffs, she held her chin high, her eyes flashing with a venomous fury that intimidated the two guards walking beside her. She knew the law, but more importantly, she knew the loopholes that money could buy.

"I am entitled to one phone call," Evelyn demanded, stopping dead in her tracks outside the processing desk. Her silk gown was ruined, stained with driveway grease and dust, but her voice commanded absolute obedience.

The desk officer didn't look up right away, tapping lazily on his keyboard before pushing an old analog receiver across the scratched glass counter. "Three minutes, lady. Make it count."

Evelyn didn't dial her corporate attorney. She didn't call her high-society publicist either. Instead, she entered an unlisted twelve-digit international number memorized months ago. The line clicked twice, followed by the low, distorted pulse of an encrypted satellite connection.

"The car didn't reach the canyon," Evelyn whispered fiercely into the receiver, her voice dropping into a desperate hiss. "The brat intercepted the gate codes. David already transferred the development fund to the public registry before the marshals arrived."

A long, chilling silence stretched across the line before a deep, calm voice responded from thousands of miles away. "You were incompetent, Evelyn. You let a street orphan disrupt a fifty-million-dollar acquisition. David was supposed to be in a hospital or six feet under by now."

"Don't talk to me about incompetence, Julian!" Evelyn snapped, watching the guard's eyes shift toward her. "David has the master drive. If he decrypts Arthur Miller’s secondary files, he won't just lock us out of the trust—he’ll uncover the entire logistics network in South America. You need to pull me out of here before the federal grand jury meets on Monday."

"The bail hearing is at eight tomorrow morning," Julian Vance replied, his tone devoid of warmth. "My firm has already secured Judge Abernathy. You will walk out of that courtroom a free woman. But listen to me carefully: David thinks he won today. He has no idea that Arthur’s original prototype key was split in two. He holds the shell, but we hold the core."

Meanwhile, back at the Vance Manor, the atmosphere was charged with quiet intensity. David sat behind the mahogany desk in his father's old library, the soft amber light of the desk lamp illuminating the small, water-damaged notebook Toby had brought him. Beside him, Toby was drinking a warm cup of cocoa, his dirty hands finally clean, though his eyes remained watchful.

Marcus, David’s trusted head of security, stepped into the room, holding a encrypted tablet. "Mr. Vance, we swept the Maybach. The sabotage wasn't executed by a novice. The hydraulic bypass was performed using an elite military-grade override tool. Only three technicians in North America have access to that equipment."

"And one of them was Arthur Miller," David murmured, gazing at the hand-drawn schematics inside Toby's notebook. "Toby, when your father worked in the lower lab, did he ever talk about a man named Julian?"

Toby froze, his cup pausing halfway to his lips. "Uncle Julian? My dad told me never to say his name. He said Uncle Julian wanted to put machines in the cargo ships that could turn off the steering from anywhere in the world. Dad said... dad said that's why they had to hide."

David felt a cold chill run down his spine. The puzzle pieces were falling into place with terrifying clarity. Julian Vance—his long-lost half-brother who had supposedly vanished seven years ago after being cast out for illegal offshore trading—had never left. He was operating from the shadows, using Evelyn as his puppet inside the family estate.

"Marcus," David said, standing up with absolute resolve. "Call the federal magistrate. Tell him we are contesting Evelyn's bail tomorrow morning. And order a full tactical sweep of Blackwood Manor. If Arthur hid the second half of the core code, it’s stored in the deep vaults under the old house."

Toby looked up, his small face tight with anxiety. "Are we going there, Mr. Vance?"

David walked over, placing a steady, reassuring hand on the boy’s shoulder. "We are, Toby. Together. Your father built that vault to protect you, and tonight, we are going to finish his work once and for all."
