Chapter 9 - Trial by Fire in the Boardroom

The mahogany-paneled boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Whitmore Tower smelled of aged leather, expensive coffee, and palpable tension. Around the long glass conference table sat twelve members of the Whitmore Enterprises board of directors—wealthy, graying men and women in designer suits who viewed corporate governance as a blood sport.

At the head of the table sat Adrian Whitmore, his face impassive, his arms crossed over his chest.

To his immediate right sat Grace Miller. She wore a sharply tailored navy blue blazer over a simple white blouse, her hair pulled back in a sleek bun, her hazel eyes completely calm despite the hostile glares directed at her from every corner of the room.

Marcus Vance sat near the back as a guest observer, smirking like a cat watching a cornered mouse.

"This is an absolute outrage!" roared Arthur Pendelton, the senior board member and a long-time ally of Marcus. He slammed his hand against the polished wood table. "Adrian, have you completely lost your mind? Appointing a domestic servant—a maid with zero corporate credentials—to the position of Executive Director of Internal Ethics without consulting the board? It’s a mockery of our corporate charter!"

Murmurs of agreement rippled around the table. Several directors nodded aggressively, eager to undermine Adrian’s unilateral authority while he was still recovering from his sabbatical.

"My appointment of Ms. Miller is entirely within the purview of the CEO under emergency bylaws Section 4-B," Adrian replied, his voice calm, steady, and dangerously quiet. "Especially when an internal audit revealed that our previous executive team was systemically looting corporate accounts."

"That was Gerald's doing, and Gerald is gone!" shouted Eleanor Vance-Smith, another board member aligned with Marcus. "You can't just pluck an uneducated kitchen maid off the estate grounds and give her executive powers! In fact, according to our legal counsel, Ms. Miller’s appointment violates federal securities regulations regarding insider access. We demand an immediate vote of no confidence and her formal termination!"

Grace remained silent, letting the board rage. She opened a sleek leather portfolio in front of her, extracted a single sheet of paper, and slid it smoothly across the glass table toward Arthur Pendelton.

Arthur looked down at the paper, scoffed, and picked it up. As his eyes scanned the first two lines, the arrogant smirk vanished completely from his face. His jaw went slack, and the color drained rapidly from his cheeks.

"What... what is this?" Arthur stammered, looking up in sheer terror.

"That," Grace said, her voice ringing clear and steady across the silent boardroom, "is a detailed forensic ledger showing how Vance-Sterling Capital funneled ten million dollars in illegal kickbacks through Pendelton Holdings over the past four years. And page two contains your signature on the wire transfer authorizations, Arthur."
