Chapter 8 - The Shadowy Benefactor

That evening, the sun dipped below the Manhattan skyline, casting a fiery orange glow across the glass facade of Whitmore Tower. Fifty floors above the bustling city streets, in a sprawling corner office overlooking Central Park, Adrian Whitmore stood before floor-to-ceiling windows, swirling amber whiskey in a crystal tumbler.

The door behind him opened softly, and Marcus Vance—Gerald’s older, far more dangerous brother and the senior managing partner of Vance-Sterling Capital—stepped into the office. Marcus did not look like a man mourning his brother’s downfall; he looked like a shark smelling blood in the water.

"Adrian," Marcus purred smoothly, adjusting his cufflinks as he approached the desk. "I hear my incompetent brother was tossed out of your mansion like a common pickpocket this morning. Forty-two million dollars allegedly missing. Quite the dramatic scene."

Adrian didn't turn around immediately. He took a slow sip of his whiskey before pivoting to face his visitor, his eyes as cold as glacial ice.

"Your brother didn't just steal from me, Marcus," Adrian said evenly. "He betrayed a fiduciary trust. He’s facing twenty years in federal prison. And if I find out you were laundering those funds through your private equity firm, you’ll be sharing a cell with him."

Marcus let out a low, chilling chuckle. He walked over to the leather armchair opposite Adrian’s desk and seated himself without being invited.

"Prison? Please, Adrian. Gerald is a fool, yes, but he’s a small fish," Marcus said, leaning back and crossing his legs. "You think forty-two million is the worst of your problems? You’ve been locked away in your grief for eighteen months, playing hermit in your Connecticut estate. While you were away, the corporate landscape shifted. Whitmore Enterprises is vulnerable. And your new little pet project—that twenty-eight-year-old maid you just appointed as Head of Internal Ethics—is walking into a slaughterhouse."

Adrian’s expression hardened instantly. The air in the office dropped ten degrees. "If you or anyone in your syndicate touches Grace Miller, Marcus, I will personally dismantle your entire financial empire brick by brick until you're begging on the very same street corner I stood on yesterday."

Marcus smiled, a predatory grin that reached his eyes. "We don't need to touch her, Adrian. The board of directors is meeting tomorrow morning. And a majority of your board members happen to have very deep financial ties to Vance-Sterling Capital. Appointing an unqualified maid to an executive position without board approval is a direct violation of corporate bylaws."

Marcus stood up, smoothing his tie, and leaned over Adrian’s desk.

"By tomorrow afternoon, your new ethical darling won't just be fired—she’ll be facing criminal charges for corporate impersonation and insider trading. Welcome back to the real world, Adrian."
