Chapter 3 - The Secret in the East Wing Study

The east wing study of Whitmore House was a sanctuary of dark mahogany, leather-bound first editions, and multi-screen Bloomberg terminals that monitored global stock exchanges twenty-four hours a day. It was also the nerve center of Gerald Vance’s illicit financial empire.

Locked behind a biometric vault disguised as a nineteenth-century bookcase, Gerald sat at his mahogany desk, furiously typing codes into his secure terminal. On the main monitor, a complex web of offshore accounts scrolled past—numbered accounts in the Cayman Islands, Swiss banks, and shell corporations registered in the British Virgin Islands.

"Damn it, damn it, damn it!" Gerald slammed his fist against the desk.

Over the past three years, while Adrian Whitmore had retreated into a self-imposed sabbatical following the tragic death of his younger sister, Gerald had systematically looted Whitmore Enterprises. He had siphoned nearly forty-two million dollars into personal accounts, funding luxury penthouses in Manhattan, superyachts in Monaco, and a lavish lifestyle that outshone his billionaire boss.

He thought he was safe. Adrian was a recluse, a ghost who hadn't set foot in the corporate headquarters in eighteen months, preferring to manage his vast wealth through encrypted digital channels. But recently, red flags had started appearing in the internal compliance reports—red flags flagged not by high-paid auditors, but by junior administrative staff. Specifically, Grace Miller.

Grace had stumbled upon anomalous expense reports six months ago while filing routine maintenance invoices. She had noticed discrepancies in landscaping fees—hundreds of thousands of dollars funneled to a landscaping company that didn't exist, owned by a shell corporation tied directly to Gerald Vance’s brother-in-law.

Instead of going to the police, where Gerald's high-priced lawyers could easily bury her, Grace had quietly kept copies, slipping them into secure digital lockers while biding her time.

Suddenly, a sharp knock rattled the heavy oak door of the study.

"Mr. Vance?" Victor’s voice boomed from the hallway. "We have a problem at the front gate."

Gerald quickly minimized the offshore banking software, pulling up a standard corporate spreadsheet before unlocking the door. "What is it, Victor? Make it quick. I’m preparing for the board meeting."

Victor stepped inside, wiping sweat from his thick brow. "That beggar you told me to chase off? He’s back. And he’s sitting right on the stone bench outside the main gates refusing to move. Even worse... Grace brought him another cup of coffee and a warm blanket from the linen closet."

Gerald’s eyes flashed with furious rage. "That insolent little maid is begging for her termination. Grab your taser, Victor. Drag that homeless scum off our property, and drag Grace to my office. Today, someone is getting fired, and someone is going to jail."
