Chapter 18 - The Trap Springs

It was a crisp Friday evening when Grace stepped out of the side entrance of Whitmore Tower into the quiet courtyard. Adrian was tied up in a late-night emergency acquisition call with London partners and wouldn't be able to join her for dinner as planned.

She pulled her wool coat tight against the autumn chill and walked toward her parked car in the underground parking garage.

The parking garage was eerily silent. The fluorescent overhead lights flickered intermittently, casting long, dancing shadows across the concrete pillars. Grace’s footsteps echoed sharply against the floor.

Suddenly, a low sound caught her attention—a sharp metallic scraping noise from behind the concrete pillar near her car.

Grace stopped dead in her tracks. "Hello?" she called out, her heart rate accelerating.

No answer.

She reached into her handbag, her fingers brushing against her smartphone, ready to dial emergency services.

Before she could pull the phone out, heavy footsteps rushed toward her from behind. A large, rough hand clamped firmly over her mouth, cutting off her scream, while another arm wrapped around her waist like a steel vice, dragging her backward into the deep shadows behind a concrete pillar.

Grace fought back with everything she had, kicking, scratching, and thrashing against her attacker, but the man was too strong, too heavy.

"Quiet down, little bird," a harsh voice hissed in her ear. "Mr. Vance sends his regards... or rather, his new business partners do."

Before consciousness began to fade from the suffocating grip, the sound of screeching tires echoed through the garage entrance.
