Chapter 17 - Shadows in the Rearview Mirror

Three months passed. Whitmore Enterprises had risen from the turbulence stronger, cleaner, and more profitable than ever before. Marcus Vance and his brother Gerald were currently sitting in adjacent cells at a federal penitentiary in upstate New York, awaiting a trial that promised decades behind bars.
Grace Miller had officially transitioned into her role as Executive Director, proving herself to be not only fiercely ethical but a brilliant corporate strategist. The board of directors now viewed her with a mixture of profound respect and cautious awe.
Yet, not everyone in the corporate underworld was willing to let go so easily.
Late one evening, in a dimly lit private lounge across from Central Park, a shadowy figure sat in a leather booth, staring at a dossier spread across the table. The dossier bore Grace Miller’s face circled in red ink, alongside financial records of her family’s past.
"So, this is the little maid who brought down the Vance syndicate," a low, gravelly voice murmured from the darkness of the booth.
"She’s clever, sir," replied a subordinate standing respectfully nearby. "And Adrian Whitmore has placed her right by his side. They're practically inseparable."
The shadowy figure took a slow sip of scotch, a cold, dangerous smile spreading across his face. "Nobody gets to dismantle my regional syndicate and walk away unscathed. If Marcus failed from the inside, we’ll strike from the blind spot."

He slid a photograph across the table—a picture of Grace walking out of her apartment building early that morning.
"Keep watch on her every move," the figure commanded. "When the time is right, we’ll strike where Adrian hurts the most."
