Chapter 13 - Dawn of the Coup

The morning sun rose over New York City, casting long, sharp shadows across the glass canyons of Manhattan. Inside the grand conference hall of Whitmore Tower, the annual shareholder meeting was scheduled to begin in less than thirty minutes. Hundreds of investors, journalists, and financial analysts packed the auditorium, buzzing with rumors of corporate upheaval, missing millions, and an imminent hostile takeover.
In the executive holding room backstage, Grace Miller stood before a floor-to-ceiling mirror, smoothing down the lapels of her sharp navy suit. Her knuckles were bruised from the previous night's struggle, but her eyes were razor-sharp.
Adrian walked into the room, dressed in a bespoke charcoal-grey suit, adjusting his cuffs. The physical bruises from the mercenary attack were hidden beneath his collar, but the cold, calculating fury in his grey eyes was unmistakable.
"The police hauled the mercenaries away before dawn, and Marcus's legal team has already filed injunctions claiming the break-in was an 'unauthorized break-in by disgruntled former employees'," Adrian said, his voice clipped. "He’s playing dirty, and the media is eating it out of his hand."
"Let them play dirty," Grace replied calmly, turning to face him. "We have the physical ledger backups, the untampered SWIFT wire receipts, and the digital footprint of every shell company Marcus controls. When we step onto that stage, we don't just defend the company—we obliterate them."
Adrian stopped just inches away from her. For a moment, the heavy corporate war receded into the background. He reached out, gently touching a small bruise near her jawline where the smoke and debris had grazed her skin.
"When this is all over, Grace... I want to take you somewhere far away from Wall Street," Adrian whispered, his voice softening completely. "Somewhere where nobody cares about billions of dollars or corporate boards."
Grace looked up into his eyes, her heart skipping a beat. "Is that a promise, Mr. Whitmore?"
"Call me Adrian," he smiled softly. "And yes. It’s a promise."

The stage manager knocked twice on the heavy wooden door. "Mr. Whitmore, Ms. Miller. Five minutes until curtain."
They walked out side by side into the blinding lights of the main auditorium.
