Chapter 2 - The Serpent Inside the Gates

Inside the sprawling, neo-classical marble foyer of Whitmore House, Chief Operating Officer Gerald Vance stood with his tailored Italian wool suit immaculate, his Rolex reflecting the brilliant crystal chandelier overhead. Gerald tapped his polished leather shoe against the marble floor, his face twisted into a mask of corporate impatience.

"Where is Grace?" Gerald snapped, glaring at the head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, who was nervously folding a silver-threaded tea towel. "The board meeting in Manhattan starts in two hours, and my portfolio reports are nowhere on my desk. If that little peasant girl is slacking off again, I’m cutting her hours to zero."

Mrs. Gable swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward the double doors leading to the rear gardens. "She was just outside, Mr. Vance. Delivering breakfast to the staff annex, I believe."

"Staff annex? Nonsense," Gerald scoffed, adjusting his silk tie. "I saw her walking toward the perimeter gate from my window. That girl has a dangerous habit of treating vagrants like human beings. In this world, weakness is a disease, and charity is a tax on stupidity."

At that exact moment, the heavy oak doors swung open, and Grace walked into the foyer, carrying an empty silver tray. She stopped immediately upon seeing Gerald, her posture remaining poised, though her heart gave a slight, defensive flutter.

"Mr. Vance," Grace said evenly. "Your quarterly audit files are printed, bound, and sitting neatly on your private desk in the east wing library."

Gerald narrowed his eyes, stepping toward her with predatory slowness. He stopped inches away, towering over her, his cologne smelling of expensive sandalwood and sulfurous arrogance.

"Grace," Gerald purred, his voice dripping with condescension. "You think you’re terribly clever, don’t you? You wear that modest little uniform and pretend you're a saint rescuing stray cats and homeless derelicts. Let me remind you of something very important. You are a maid. You were hired to scrub toilets, dust baseboards, and keep your mouth shut."

Grace looked straight into Gerald’s cold, reptilian eyes. She didn't cower. "Scrubbing toilets is honest work, Mr. Vance. Embezzling thirty million dollars through shell companies in the Cayman Islands—now that takes real creativity. I suppose that’s why you spend so much time in the east wing study with the door locked."

Gerald’s face drained of color for a split second, though he masked his panic with a sharp, booming laugh that echoed off the marble walls.

"Watch your tongue, little girl," Gerald hissed, leaning in close so Mrs. Gable couldn't hear. "One false word, and I will ensure you never work another day in Fairfield County. You’ll be blacklisted so fast your head will spin."

"Try it," Grace whispered back, her voice like ice. "Truth has a funny way of coming out, Mr. Vance. Even through locked doors."

As Gerald turned on his heel and stormed away toward his study, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, seeing an encrypted text message from an unknown number: *The audit is coming, Gerald. Enjoy the view from the top while it lasts.*

Gerald cursed under his breath, his hands trembling slightly against the screen. He had no idea that the beggar he had ordered Victor to chase away was actually the billionaire owner himself—Adrian Whitmore—testing his own staff before executing the final trap.
