Chapter 10 - The First Domino Falls

The silence in the boardroom was so profound that you could hear the hum of the air conditioning vents fifty stories above Manhattan. Every eye swung from Grace Miller to Arthur Pendelton, who was now clutching the paper so hard his knuckles turned white. Beads of sweat broke out across his forehead.

"This... this is a forgery! It’s slander!" Arthur shrieked, half-rising from his leather chair. "She fabricated these documents! Call security! Have this woman thrown out of the building!"

Adrian Whitmore didn't move a muscle. He simply leaned forward, resting his chin on his interlocked fingers, his grey eyes locked onto Pendelton with predatory intensity.

"Go ahead, Arthur," Adrian said quietly. "Call security. And while you're at it, let's call the FBI field office in lower Manhattan. I’m sure federal agents would love to examine the original swift-code wire receipts currently sitting in my secure digital vault—receipts that match every single number on that page."

Marcus Vance stood up abruptly from the back of the room, his face twisted in fury. "This is a kangaroo court! You’re railroading board members based on fabricated evidence brought by an unqualified peasant!"

"Unqualified?" Adrian stood up, towering over the boardroom table, his presence commanding absolute obedience. "Grace Miller discovered what your brother stole while your high-priced compliance team was looking the other way. And in less than twelve hours on the job, she’s already uncovered the corruption rotting this board from the inside out."

Adrian looked around the table at the remaining board members, who were now suddenly very interested in their coffee cups.

"Arthur Pendelton," Adrian said coldly, "you have two choices. You can resign from this board effective immediately and cooperate fully with federal investigators, or I will personally see to it that you spend your golden years sharing a cell with Gerald."

Arthur looked at Marcus for support, but Marcus had already turned toward the double doors, realizing the trap had snapped shut. Defeated, Arthur slumped back into his chair, dropped his pen on the table, and whispered hoarsely, "I... I resign."

As Arthur packed his leather briefcase with shaking hands and shuffled out of the boardroom in absolute disgrace, Adrian turned to Grace. A subtle, approving nod passed between them. The war had just begun, but the first major battle had been won.
