Chapter 5 - The Maid Who Knew Too Much

Grace’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. She had spent the last twenty minutes watching the confrontation unfold from the safety of the kitchen window, expecting the beggar to be arrested or beaten by Victor. Instead, the beggar had turned out to be none other than Adrian Whitmore—the billionaire recluse, the most feared titan of industry in the United States.

And now, he was calling her by name.

Grace dropped the stack of linens onto a nearby patio table, smoothed down her apron, and walked across the flagstone terrace toward the front courtyard. Every eye was on her—Victor looked terrified, Gerald looked like he was about to suffer a cardiac arrest, and Adrian stood with his hands casually tucked into the pockets of his tattered jacket, watching her with an unreadable, intense gaze.

"Mr. Whitmore," Grace said, keeping her voice steady despite the trembling in her knees. "You called for me?"

Adrian’s stern expression softened slightly as he looked at her. The cold, predatory aura that made Wall Street executives cower vanished, replaced by a genuine, warm curiosity.

"You gave a dirty, starving beggar your own breakfast, a warm cashmere blanket, and your protection against armed guards," Adrian said, his voice echoing clearly across the courtyard. "When everyone else spat on me, cursed at me, and threatened me with prison, you treated me like a human being. Why?"

Grace looked up, meeting his piercing grey eyes without hesitation. "Because hunger doesn’t care about bank accounts, Mr. Whitmore. And cruelty is a choice. I didn't help you because you were rich; I helped you because you were human."

A profound silence fell over the courtyard. Gerald Vance's face twisted with jealous rage. He stepped forward, desperately trying to regain control of the narrative.

"Adrian, don't listen to this manipulative little opportunist!" Gerald barked, pointing an accusing finger at Grace. "She’s a disgruntled employee! She’s been stealing office supplies, violating estate security protocols, and harassing management! In fact, I was just about to fire her this morning for gross insubordination!"

Grace didn't flinch. She reached into the deep pocket of her apron, pulled out a crisp, sealed manila envelope, and held it out toward the billionaire.

"He’s lying, Mr. Whitmore," Grace said clearly. "He’s not firing me for insubordination. He’s terrified that I’m going to hand you this."

Gerald lunged forward like a cornered animal, attempting to snatch the envelope from Grace’s hand. "Give me that! It’s forged! She’s forging company documents!"

Before Gerald’s fingers could graze the envelope, Adrian’s hand shot out with lightning speed, grabbing Gerald’s wrist in a grip so tight bones seemed to crack. Gerald shrieked in pain, falling to his knees on the gravel.

Adrian slowly took the manila envelope from Grace’s hand, his eyes never leaving Gerald’s terrified face.

"Let's see what’s inside, shall we?" Adrian whispered, breaking the wax seal.
