Chapter 10 - The Viper Strikes Back

The warning came none too soon. Before Mateo could even sprint up the stairs to warn Elena, the sound of blaring sirens echoed outside St. Jude's Clinic. Three black-and-white state police cruisers pulled up to the front entrance, tires screeching on the wet pavement.
Four state troopers, led by Captain Alvarez—a known loyalist to Judge Morales—marched into the lobby, weapons drawn.
"Federal Agent Vance!" Captain Alvarez announced loudly, holding up a official document. "I have a state warrant signed by Judge Morales for the immediate arrest of Elena Fuentes for aggravated kidnapping, burglary, and grand theft!"
Agent Vance stepped directly into Alvarez's path, blocking the elevator doors. "Stand down, Captain! This is a federal investigation involving national security and cartel racketeering. Your warrant is invalid!"
"This is state jurisdiction, Vance!" Alvarez sneered, unholstering his sidearm. "Move aside, or I'll arrest you for obstruction of justice!"
Upstairs in Room 304, Mateo burst into the room. "Elena, we have to go! Right now!"
Valeria sat up in panic. "What's happening?!"
"Adrián's allies in the state court are trying to shut us down," Mateo said hurriedly, grabbing Valeria's coat and medical chart. "They brought state police to arrest Elena and seize the files before Vance can transfer them to the federal grand jury!"
Elena’s eyes narrowed into slits. "They think they can use their badges to steal my daughter again? Never."
"Dr. Lin!" Mateo called out. "Is there an underground exit?"
"The laundry chute leads to the basement loading dock," Dr. Lin said without hesitation, pulling a ring of master keys from her pocket. "Follow me!"
Dr. Lin guided Elena, Mateo, and Valeria down the service stairwell, dodging the main elevators where heavy footsteps and shouting could be heard echoing from the lobby. They reached the basement laundry facility, where a large delivery van was parked near the loading bay.
"Take my personal van," Dr. Lin said, throwing the keys to Mateo. "It has tinted windows and a medical permit decal. The police won't stop it at the perimeter."
"Thank you, Sarah," Elena said, helping Valeria into the rear passenger bench of the van.
Mateo slammed the driver's door shut, started the diesel engine, and smashed through the plastic loading bay curtains just as Captain Alvarez and three officers burst into the basement with guns drawn.
"Stop that van!" Alvarez screamed, firing two shots toward the tires.
The bullets struck the concrete floor, ricocheting uselessly as Mateo slammed on the gas, tearing out of the basement garage into the pouring rain.
Inside the van, Valeria held her stomach, terrified. "Where are we going, Mom? They own the whole state!"
Elena sat beside her daughter, her phone in hand, looking at the third flash drive—the one Mateo hadn't opened yet.
"They own the state," Elena said, her voice deadly quiet. "But they don't own the internet. Mateo, drive us to the State Television Network headquarters downtown."

Mateo glanced in the rearview mirror, a slow grin spreading across his face. "The live morning news broadcast starts in thirty minutes."
"If they want a public war," Elena declared, "we will give them the biggest show in the country."
