Chapter 11 - The Broadcast Dilemma

The rain had eased into a persistent drizzle by 5:15 AM as the delivery van slipped into the underground parking garage of the Channel 9 State Television Network building. Downtown Toluca was quiet, but inside the news studio, the morning production crew was frantically preparing for the 6:00 AM live news bulletin—the most watched news program in the entire state.
Mateo parked the van in a dark bay near the service elevators. "My former colleague, Julia Reyes, is the executive producer of the morning show," Mateo whispered, turning off the engine. "She’s one of the few journalists left who hasn't sold out to Adrián's network. But getting past security with state warrants out for your arrest won't be easy."
Elena looked down at the third flash drive in her palm. "We don't need to sneak in, Mateo. We just need to get Julia to look at what's on this drive."
Valeria sat up slowly, clutching a blanket around her shoulders. "Mom, are you sure about this? If we broadcast this live, Adrián’s investors... the cartel leaders... they will come after us with everything they have."
Elena grabbed Valeria's face gently in both hands, looking straight into her eyes. "Valeria, as long as these secrets stay hidden in courtrooms and private safes, they have power over us. The only way to strip a monster of his power is to drag him into the sunlight where everyone can see him."
Mateo pulled out his phone and dialed Julia Reyes' direct line. After four rings, a woman answered.
"Julia, it's Mateo," he said urgently.
"Mateo? Where on earth have you been?" Julia’s voice was tense over the line. "The police wire just broadcast a high-priority bulletin! State troopers are searching for your sister, Elena! They say she kidnapped Adrián Cárdenas's wife!"
"Julia, listen to me very carefully," Mateo interrupted. "I am in your basement right now with my sister and Valeria Cárdenas. Valeria was brutally beaten by Adrián. He’s been using state police and Judge Morales to cover up domestic abuse, cartel money laundering, and judicial bribery."
Silence stretched over the phone line for three long seconds.
"Mateo... that is a massive accusation," Julia breathed. "Adrián Cárdenas is board chairman of our network’s parent company!"
"Which is why you need to see this drive before you air your 6:00 AM broadcast," Mateo insisted. "Come down to section B-4 in the basement. Five minutes, Julia. If you don't believe what you see, we’ll leave."
Four minutes later, the elevator doors opened, and Julia Reyes—a sharp woman in her late forty’s with crisp blazer and short dark hair—stepped into the dim basement garage. Mateo flashed his headlights once.
Julia walked swiftly to the van. Mateo slid open the side door, revealing Valeria’s battered face, her swollen belly, and the mountain of legal documentation spread across the seat.
Julia gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. "My God... Valeria..."
"This isn't a kidnapping, Julia," Elena said, handing her a tablet displaying the decrypted video files. "This is a survival story. And if you don't help us tell it right now, my daughter and her baby will be murdered by the very men who swear to uphold the law."

Julia stared at the video playing on the screen—a crystal-clear recording of State Judge Morales taking a million-dollar bribe from Adrián Cárdenas inside a private club.
Julia’s eyes widened with journalistic shock. "This... this changes everything."
