Chapter 6 - A Trap Set in Steel

The storm raged relentlessly over the abandoned industrial railway station on the edge of Highway 54. Rusting train cars stood like silent iron behemoths under the dark sky, surrounded by overgrown weeds and broken glass.
Elena stood near the center of the decaying platform, illuminated by the dim headlight of her parked sedan. She wore a heavy coat, her hands tucked deep into her pockets, holding a small digital recorder. Mateo was positioned three hundred yards away on the roof of an old water tower, equipped with a long-range camera and a tactical rifle he had kept from his military service days.
"Elena, do you copy?" Mateo's voice came through a tiny earpiece in her ear.
"I hear you, Mateo," Elena whispered. "Is everything ready?"
"The cloud uplink is active," Mateo confirmed. "If my heart rate drops or if I hit the manual transmitter on my phone, the entire *PROJECT MIRAGE* archive goes live to Federal Agent Marcus Vance. You hold all the cards, Elena. Stay calm."
At precisely 2:15 AM, two vehicles pulled onto the gravel lot outside the station. The lead car was Adrián's black Mercedes; behind it was an unmarked black SUV with tinted windows.
The car doors opened. Adrián stepped out, wearing a long trench coat over his suit. He walked around to the passenger side, opened the door, and pulled Valeria out. Valeria was crying softly, her face bruised, clutching her belly with both arms. Behind them, two burly men in tactical gear stepped out of the SUV, holding suppressed handguns.
"Valeria!" Elena called out, taking a step forward.
"Stay right there, Elena!" Adrián yelled, his voice cutting through the sound of falling rain. He grabbed Valeria by the arm, keeping her close in front of him. "Where are the files?"
"Let Valeria walk to me first," Elena demanded. "Then you get the hard drives."
Adrián chuckled coldly. "You don't make demands here, old woman. You think a few leaked videos scare me? I have men in every federal department. You step out of line, and your daughter dies before the files even finish uploading."
"You're lying, Adrián," Elena said, taking a slow, calculated step closer. "If you weren't terrified, you wouldn't have brought two armed hitmen to an abandoned train station at two in the morning. You're terrified because you know once those files reach Agent Vance, your cartel bosses will kill you themselves just to keep you quiet."
Adrián’s expression twisted into rage. "Shut up!"
"He's right, isn't he?" Elena continued, her voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "You aren't just protecting yourself from the law. You're protecting yourself from the very criminals you represented! If they find out you kept blackmail files on them, you won't survive a single night!"
Adrián sneered and signaled to one of the armed men beside him. "Search the car. Kill the old woman once you find the drives."
"Mateo, now!" Elena shouted into her collar.
A loud, sharp gunshot cracked through the night air. The bullet slammed directly into the shoulder of the hitman stepping toward Elena's car, sending him spinning to the ground with a scream.
"Sniper!" the second hitman yelled, diving behind the SUV for cover.
Panic erupted. Adrián grabbed Valeria by the throat, pulling her back toward his Mercedes, drawing a pistol from inside his jacket. "You crazy bitch! I'll kill her right now!"
"Adrián, look down!" Elena screamed, pointing her hand straight at his chest.
A bright red laser dot from Mateo's scope hovered precisely between Adrián's eyes.

"Drop the gun and let my daughter go," Elena said, her voice chillingly devoid of fear. "Or my brother puts a bullet through your forehead, and the files go live in three seconds."
Adrián froze. His breath hitched as he stared at the red dot dancing on his forehead. The power balance had shattered completely.
