Chapter 3 - Hidden Behind the Law

At 12:40 AM, Elena slipped through the iron gate of the service entry behind Adrián’s estate. Rain slammed against the concrete, masking the sound of her footsteps. She inserted the brass key into the side door lock. It turned with a soft click.
She stepped into the dark utility mudroom, her heart pounding like a war drum in her chest. The house was dead quiet. She carefully crept up the back stairs, avoiding the squeaky wooden planks she had memorized over past visits.
Reaching the second-floor corridor, she verified that Valeria's bedroom door was locked tight from the inside. Satisfied that her daughter was safe for the moment, Elena headed straight for Adrián's private home office at the far end of the hall.
The office smelled strongly of polished mahogany, leather, and vanity. Framed diplomas from prestigious law schools lined the walls, alongside glossy photographs of Adrián posing with governors, supreme court judges, and notorious corporate tycoons. A gilded statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe stood on a shelf next to volumes of criminal code.
Elena opened the desk drawers one by one. Files on pending murder trials, bribery allegations, and money laundering schemes were neatly arranged. But none of these contained what she was looking for. She wasn't looking for his client work; she was looking for his personal leverage.
She moved to the large mahogany bookshelf covering the west wall. She began pulling on book spines, searching for a false front. On the third shelf, behind a heavy set of legal encyclopedias, she spotted a subtle seam in the wood. She pressed hard against the panel.
With a soft pneumatic hiss, the bookshelf popped open, revealing a wall-embedded biometric safe.
Elena stared at the digital keypad. A six-digit code was required. She remembered a quiet conversation she had with Valeria months ago during a family holiday. Valeria had complained that Adrián used the same numerical combination for everything—his phone, his safe, his gym locker—because he believed his own birthdate was his ultimate lucky charm.
Elena typed in the six digits: 08-11-89.
The safe chimed softly, and the heavy steel door unlatched.
Elena opened it. Inside were stacks of cash tied in bands, three unlabelled flash drives, a black leather-bound ledger, and a thick manila folder labeled *PROJECT MIRAGE*.
She pulled out the manila folder and opened it under her flashlight beam. What she saw made her blood run cold.
It wasn't just documents—it was a meticulously documented portfolio of blackmail. Adrián had wiretapped, filmed, and recorded the very judges, police chiefs, and district attorneys who handled his cases. There were photos of high-ranking officials accepting duffel bags of cash, receipts for offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, and encrypted records of crushed domestic abuse cases—including previous complaints made by other women before Valeria.
Adrián hadn't just built a law practice; he had constructed a reign of terror based on absolute extortion. Anyone who dared investigate him or rule against his clients would be instantly ruined.
Elena felt a cold sweat break out across her neck. This was why Valeria was terrified. Adrián was untouchable because he held the collar of every powerful man in the city.
Suddenly, the silent house echoed with the sharp sound of a garage door opening downstairs.
Elena froze. Adrián had returned.
She quickly shoved the manila folder and the three flash drives into her handbag, relocked the safe, and pushed the bookshelf back into position. Her heart slammed frantically against her ribs as she heard heavy footsteps entering the front foyer downstairs.

"Valeria?" Adrián's voice boomed from the foyer, sounding intoxicated and aggressive.
Elena looked around the office. There was no exit except the door leading to the main hallway—and Adrián was already walking up the stairs.
