Chapter 4 - The Escape into the Storm

Elena pressed her back against the dark mahogany wall inside Adrián's office. She held her breath, counting the heavy thuds of his designer shoes climbing the marble staircase.
"Valeria!" Adrián called out again, his voice slurred slightly with alcohol. "Open the damn bedroom door! I know you're awake!"
He walked past the office door toward the master bedroom. Elena took advantage of the brief second his back was turned. She slipped silently out of the office, keeping close to the shadows of the corridor wall.
She reached the back service staircase just as Adrián began pounding furiously on the master bedroom door.
"Valeria! Open this door right now!" Adrián barked, rattling the handle violently. "Don't test my patience tonight!"
Elena didn't wait to hear more. She flew down the back staircase, burst through the service door into the pouring rain, and sprinted toward her car parked three blocks away. Water soaked her coat and blinded her vision, but she didn't slow down until she slammed her car door shut and locked it from the inside.
Her hands shook violently as she placed the stole flash drives and the *PROJECT MIRAGE* folder on the passenger seat. She had the key to destroying Adrián Cárdenas, but she also knew that if he discovered these files were missing, he would burn down the world to get them back.
Elena started the engine and drove directly to the only person in the city she could trust: her elder brother, Mateo, a retired investigative journalist who had spent thirty years exposing municipal corruption before going into hiding after a near-fatal 'car accident'.
Twenty minutes later, Elena knocked on the door of a small, nondescript apartment on the outskirts of the city. Mateo opened the door, his eyes widening in surprise as he saw his sister dripping wet, pale, and holding a thick bundle of documents against her chest.
"Elena? What happened to you?" Mateo asked, pulling her inside and locking the triple-bolt lock behind her.
"Mateo... he's hurting her," Elena gasped, dropping onto the worn sofa. "Adrián is beating Valeria. She's seven months pregnant, Mateo!"
Mateo’s face hardened instantly. "That bastard. I knew there was something rotten behind that golden boy image. Did you call the police?"
"The police?" Elena let out a bitter laugh. "Look at this."
She opened her bag and dumped the contents onto the coffee table. Mateo picked up the manila folder and began flipping through the pages. As his eyes scanned the bank statements, wiretap transcripts, and photographs, his jaw dropped in horror.
"My God, Elena..." Mateo whispered, flipping through a list of names. "This isn't just leverage. This is the entire judicial infrastructure of the state. Judge Morales, Chief Constable Vargas, Prosecutor Mendez... Adrián has all of them in his pocket. If any officer receives a domestic violence call from Valeria, they report directly to Adrián."
"That's why she couldn't leave," Elena said, tears finally spilling from her eyes. "He threatened to take her baby and put me in prison. He made her believe she was completely alone."
"She isn't alone anymore," Mateo said sternly. He reached for his laptop and plugged in one of the flash drives. "If we release this blindly to the press or the local authorities, Adrián's allies will suppress it and kill us before sunrise. We need a strategy, Elena. We need to wage war."
Before Mateo could open the encrypted files on the flash drive, Elena's phone began to ring. The caller ID displayed Valeria's name.

Elena picked it up immediately. "Valeria! Are you okay?"
"Mom..." Valeria's voice was barely a whisper, breathless and terrifyingly weak. "He found out the safe was tampered with. He knows someone took his files... Mom, he has a gun. He's coming for you!"
