Chapter 18 - The Final Verdict

Nine months after the night of the escape, the final sentencing hearing for Adrián Cárdenas was held in the Federal High Court. Because of security protocols and public interest, the hearing was broadcast across national news channels.
Elena, Valeria, and Mateo sat in the front row of the gallery, surrounded by supportive legal advocates and federal officers. Don Fernando sat quietly beside them, offering a solid presence of family unity.
Adrián was brought into the courtroom in orange prison jumpsuits, heavy wrist chains, and leg irons. His physical appearance had transformed drastically—his sleek, expensive hair was shorn short, his posture slumped, his arrogance completely shattered.
He glanced toward the spectator gallery. When his eyes landed on Valeria, who sat tall, radiant, and composed beside her mother, Adrián flinched, unable to hold her gaze.
The Federal Judge slammed the gavel down, calling the court to order.
"In the matter of the United States Federal Prosecution versus Adrián Cárdenas," the Judge announced, reading from the official verdict documents. "This court finds the defendant guilty on all sixty-four federal counts, including human rights violations, systemic bribery, extortion, and aggravated domestic felony violence."
The Judge looked over his spectacles directly at Adrián.
"You were a officer of the court, Mr. Cárdenas," the Judge stated sternly. "You used your knowledge of the law not to protect the vulnerable, but to construct a fortress of terror and corruption. You abused the sacred trust of marriage and attempted to destroy the very mother of your child. This court shows zero leniency."
The Judge raised the gavel. "I sentence you to two consecutive life terms in maximum-security federal penitentiary, plus forty-five years without the possibility of parole."
Gavel struck the wooden block with a loud, resounding thud.
*BANG!*
The courtroom erupted into thunderous applause. Reporters scrambled to send their breaking news bulletins, while federal marshals immediately hauled a weeping, broken Adrián out through the side doors.
Valeria didn't cry. She closed her eyes, took a deep, liberating breath, and felt the final chains of her past snap away forever.

Elena took Valeria's hand, squeezing it tightly. "It is finished," Elena whispered.
"No, Mom," Valeria smiled, tears of joy sparkling in her eyes. "It's just beginning."
