Chapter 5 - The Shadows Lengthen

The line went dead with a harsh, static click.
"Valeria!" Elena screamed into the receiver, but there was only a dial tone. She scrambled to her feet, her hands trembling violently. "Mateo, he has her! He knows the files are gone!"
"Elena, wait! Stop and think!" Mateo grabbed her by the shoulders, forcing her to look at him. "If you run back there now, you walk straight into his trap. He wants you to panic. He wants you to bring the files back!"
"I cannot leave my daughter in the hands of a murderer!" Elena yelled, her eyes blazing with fierce maternal desperation.
"Listen to me!" Mateo shouted back. "If Adrián has a gun and he knows his life's work is compromised, he is a cornered rat. If you show up empty-handed or with the files, he has zero reason to keep either of you alive. We need leverage right now!"
Mateo quickly plugged the second flash drive into his computer. A prompt popped up asking for an encryption key. Mateo typed frantically, bypassing standard protocols using old decryption scripts from his journalism days. After three agonizing minutes, the screen flashed green, and folders began opening.
"Look at this," Mateo said, pointing at the monitor. "Video logs."
He clicked on a video file dated two weeks ago. The screen showed a private basement garage. Adrián was standing beside a high-ranking state senator, handing him a heavy black duffel bag. In exchange, the senator handed Adrián a sealed government envelope containing confidential intelligence on an upcoming federal raid against a major cartel syndicate.
"He's not just a defense lawyer," Mateo breathed, horror dawning on his face. "Adrián is laundering cartel money and selling government intelligence. That's how he bought his immunity."
"If the federal authorities see this..." Elena realized.
"The local police are corrupt, but the Federal Special Task Force in the capital isn't," Mateo said. "Agent Marcus Vance head that division. He’s been trying to build a case against Adrián's cartel associates for three years, but every time he gets close, the state judges throw out the warrants."
"Then we give this to Vance," Elena insisted.
"Not yet," Mateo replied. "We use this as our shield. I will copy these files onto three separate cloud servers with a dead-man's switch. If anything happens to us, or if Valeria isn't released within two hours, these files will automatically be broadcast to the Federal Prosecutor's Office and every major news outlet in the country."
Elena took a deep, shaky breath, wiping the sweat from her forehead. "And how do we get Valeria out tonight?"
"We make Adrián think he's winning," Mateo said, a dangerous glint appearing in his eyes. "We call him."
Elena took her phone, dialed Adrián's personal cell phone, and put it on speaker. It rang twice before Adrián answered. His voice was icy, devoid of any legal charm.
"Elena," Adrián said calmly. "I believe you have something that belongs to me."
"And you have my daughter," Elena replied, her tone as sharp as a razor. "Touch a single hair on her head, Adrián, and I swear to you, your life as you know it ends tonight."
Adrián let out a dark, mocking laugh over the line. "You think you're clever, old woman? You took paper and digital toys. I own the police. I own the courts. By morning, you will be wanted for grand larceny and armed burglary. Hand over the files, or Valeria will suffer the consequences of your stupidity."
"Check your email, Adrián," Mateo chimed in, leaning over the phone. "We just sent you a five-second clip of file package 'MIRAGE-09'. You have ninety minutes to bring Valeria to the old abandoned train station on Highway 54. If you bring your police friends, or if Valeria has another bruise on her body, the entire archive goes live on federal servers."

Silence fell over the line. Adrián’s smooth composure finally cracked. "Who the hell is this?"
"Your nightmare," Mateo said, and hung up the phone.
