Chapter 8 - Race Against Time

"Hold on, sweetheart! Just hold on!" Elena shouted over the roaring engine and the torrential rain.

She pressed her foot firmly on the accelerator, pushing the old sedan to its absolute limit. Valeria writhed in the passenger seat, clutching her seven-month pregnant belly, her face slick with cold sweat and tears.

"Mom, it hurts so much... it's too early... she's not ready!" Valeria cried, gasping for air between sharp contractions.

"Look at me, Valeria! Deep breaths, just like we practiced!" Elena instructed, taking one hand off the wheel to hold her daughter's trembling hand tightly. "Your sister and I are not going to let anything happen to this baby. Do you hear me? You are safe now. He can never hurt you again."

In the distance behind them, siren wails cut through the night air. Through her rearview mirror, Elena saw multiple black vehicles with flashing blue lights converging on the train station. Agent Vance's federal task force was making their move, but Elena couldn't stop to celebrate. Her daughter’s life and the life of her unborn grandchild were hanging in the balance.

Elena pulled her phone out and hit speed dial. "Mateo! Where are you?"

"I'm three miles behind you," Mateo answered over the speaker. "The federal boys just swept the train station. Adrián and his hitmen are in custody, but Adrián is severely wounded. What’s your status?"

"Valeria’s went into premature labor!" Elena cried. "We can't go to the main county hospital—Adrián’s contacts run the administration there! They could intercept us!"

"Go to St. Jude’s Private Clinic on Elm Street," Mateo said immediately. "Dr. Sarah Lin is the chief of obstetrics there. She was a close friend of your late sister, and she’s completely outside the city council's influence. I'm calling her right now to prepare an emergency room."

"Understood!" Elena veered off the main highway onto the Elm Street exit ramp, tires screeching against the slick asphalt.

Ten minutes later, the sedan pulled up to the emergency bay of St. Jude’s Private Clinic. The automatic doors slid open instantly, and Dr. Sarah Lin rushed out alongside two nurses pushing a gurney.

"Valeria!" Dr. Lin called out, helping Elena lift the pregnant young woman onto the stretcher. "We’ve got you, darling. You're safe here."

"Dr. Lin, please save my baby..." Valeria wept as they wheeled her rapidly down the bright white corridor toward the delivery suite.

"I will do everything in my power," Dr. Lin promised, turning to Elena. "Elena, stay in the waiting room. We need to stabilize her blood pressure immediately—she's severely dehydrated and showing signs of physical trauma."

As the double doors of the trauma unit swung closed, Elena was left standing alone in the sterile hallway. Her clothes were soaked through with rain, her coat was stained with mud, and her hands were covered in her own daughter's dried blood.

She collapsed into a plastic chair in the waiting room, burying her face in her hands. The adrenaline that had sustained her through the night finally began to fade, leaving behind a deep, crushing exhaustion.

Twenty minutes later, the outer doors opened, and Mateo walked in, accompanied by a tall, sharp-eyed man in a dark grey suit wearing a badge around his neck.

"Elena," Mateo said gently. "This is Special Agent Marcus Vance, Federal Bureau of Investigation."

Elena stood up, adjusting her stance to face the federal officer.

Agent Vance looked at Elena with profound respect. "Mrs. Elena, your brother just handed me the master drive containing *PROJECT MIRAGE*. I’ve been trying to bring down Adrián Cárdenas and his corrupt cartel network for four years. What you did tonight... you didn't just save your daughter. You just exposed the biggest political corruption network in the history of this state."

"I don't care about your corruption network, Agent Vance," Elena said, her voice trembling with raw maternal emotion. "I only care about my daughter and my grandbaby."

Before Vance could respond, the doors to the emergency room opened, and Dr. Lin walked out, taking off her surgical mask.

Elena caught her breath. "Sarah... how are they?"
