Chapter 13 - The Tipping Point

Within fifteen minutes of the live broadcast, the Channel 9 switchboard blew up with thousands of incoming calls. News stations across the country picked up the live signal, syndicating Elena's testimony nationwide. Social media erupted with hashtags demanding the immediate resignation and arrest of Judge Morales and Chief Constable Vargas.
Inside the military hospital room where Adrián Cárdenas lay handcuffed to his bed under federal guard, a muted television on the wall was playing the live feed.
Adrián stared at the screen in utter disbelief as his own face was displayed beside cartel ledger balances and blackmail transcripts. His hand trembled against the metal bed frame.
"No... no... this can't be happening!" Adrián roared, thrashing against his restraints. "Turn it off! Turn it off!"
The door to his hospital room swung open. Special Agent Marcus Vance walked in, holding a stack of freshly issued federal arrest warrants signed by the Federal Chief Justice in the capital.
"It's over, Adrián," Vance said calmly, tossing the warrants onto the tray table. "Your friends in the state court can't save you now. Judge Morales was just taken into custody at his estate ten minutes ago. Chief Constable Vargas is currently fleeing toward the border, but federal marshals are closing in."
Adrián glared at Vance with bloodshot, desperate eyes. "You think you've won? You have no idea who I work for! The cartel will tear this city apart to eliminate everyone involved!"
"Your cartel associates are the ones who turned on you, Adrián," Vance replied with a cold smirk. "They saw the broadcast. They realize you kept black books on them. They just withdrew your legal defense funding and sent us their own statement confirming your financial crimes. You're completely on your own."
Adrián slumped back against his pillows, his face hollowed by the realization of total, absolute defeat.
Meanwhile, back at the Channel 9 television studio, Elena and Valeria were escorted off the set under heavy federal protection. The studio crew applauded as they walked past, showing deep reverence for the courage of the mother who had challenged an entire system.
Mateo met them in the green room, holding three hot cups of tea. "The Federal Attorney General just held an emergency press conference in the capital," Mateo announced, a huge smile breaking across his face. "They are initiating a full federal takeover of the state judicial district. Every case handled by Adrián Cárdenas over the past seven years is being audited!"
Valeria let out a soft breath, leaning her head against her mother's shoulder. "Mom... it's really over, isn't it?"
Elena kissed her daughter's forehead softly. "The nightmare is over, my love. Now, we rebuild."
Suddenly, Valeria gasped sharply, clutching her lower abdomen as a sudden, intense surge of pain swept through her. She gasped for air, her knuckles turning white as she squeezed Elena's hand.

"Valeria?!" Elena panicked, catching her.
"Mom..." Valeria gasped, tears of a very different kind filling her eyes. "My water just broke!"
